Farmer Uaithne Mac Cathail begins a relationship with his neighbor's daughter, Brighid. When she becomes pregnant, they decide to get married. Five months after the wedding, their son Cian is born. Uaithne and Brighid aren't really in love with each other, but they get along well enough and are happy. Both are thrilled to welcome their new son.

There is a windstorm in the area! Brighid stays inside to protect Cian while Uaithne goes outside to protect their crops and cattle. Unfortunately, many of the crops are destroyed and cattle killed, and the family faces a hard winter. Brighid appeals for help from her family, but they were affected as well. Sadly, Brighid miscarried her next child due to the stress of the storm and subsequent lack of food.

Uaithne is working on the farm when he finds a cat in the woods near his fields. The cat appears pregnant, and Uaithne tries to help the cat give birth to four kittens, but she dies. While three of the kittens sadly die, Uaithne and Brighid decide to take in the surviving fourth, who they name Emeline. Cian adores the family's new pet.

As part of their revolutionary group, Uaithne and Albán meet with great success and succeed in driving the English away from their area, though one member of the group dies in the effort. A battle between some local lords leads to a lot of Uaithne's cattle being stolen. Luckily, the revolutionary group helps him recover a few, but the faily will still have hard times. Cian develops an interest in playing games, often with his uncle Albán, who he is still very close with.

Brighid is exhausted after having her third child in three years, this time another daughter named Aoife. Little Diarmaid adores his new little sister, but Cian is beginning to resent the new children after so long as an only child. This is compounded when Albán falls in love with a woman far above him in social status, Adelaide de Rosfort, the daughter of an English lord, who he meets through his revolutionary activities. Adelaide's parents don't know about the man she loves, and she and Albán prefer to keep it that way for their own safety.

Diarmaid begins to enjoy helping his mother cook. Unfortunately, this is the worst time for him to develop such an interest, because the last harvest failed and there is a famine, with many people taking to subsistence farming. Even worse, the family, which has already dealt with hunger when there was a windstorm, goes hungry again. Sadly, little Aoife falls ill with one of the many diseases that spread during famine, and dies, breaking her parents' hearts. There isn't enough food to feed the family pet, Emeline, and the cat dies as well. Adelaide, who has never dealt with famine before, is horrified by the suffering, and nearly starves. Her son Éamonn does not survive the famine because they cannot feed him, which deeply saddens Adelaide and Albán, nearly detroying their relationship.

After last year's famine, everyone is still grieving and traumatized. Horrified at the loss of his young cousin while he was estranged from their family, Cian reconciles with his uncle Albán. As a way of coping with the trauma of nearly starving to death and losing family members, Meadhbh compulsively collects edible plants. To bring up the area's spirits, the revolutionary group holds a festival. After the festival, Albán and Adelaide reconnect after having trouble in their relationship, tested by the famine and the loss of their son. Nine months later, their third child is born, named Aoife after her recently deceased cousin with the permission of Uaithne and Brighid.

The famine left many orphans in the area. Uaithne meets one through the revolutionary group, a four-year-old boy who lost his entire family to famine and disease, and he and Brighid connect with the boy and decide to take him in. Nora quickly adores her new brother, Neill O Malowny.

Neill begins to enjoy playing games, encouraged by Cian, who has finally outgrown his resentment of his younger siblings. Meanwhile, Nora develops an interest in animals after Uaithne brings home another kitten, named Ismay, that he found in the woods. Aodh is still affected by the famine and becomes very religious, claiming to see visions and telling his bemused parents that he wants to be a monk. Both Adelaide and Brighid have sons this year. Adelaide and Albán consider naming their new son Rory after their dead son Éamonn, but they decide it would be too painful. Brighid and Uaithne name theirs Fiachra. His new siblings are suprised that they have another sibling after years without a new baby.

There are rumors of mysterious things going on in the local bogs. Uaithne attributes this to the revolutionary group, but when he asks they disclaim all responsibility. Brighid attributes the strange doings to teenagers acting up, but her little nephew Aodh believes there are evil spirits there that need to be driven out, and his mother Adelaide attributes it to a bad alignment of the stars. Cian begins helping Uaithne with the farm, pleasing his parents as he is taking responsibility. Adelaide and Albán have their second daughter, named Sorcha. Somehow, Adelaide's family hears this news and sends a cousin to visit her in an attempt to persuade her to return to the family and abandon her children and Albán, but she throws him out and angrily refuses, chasing him out of the village.

Some Gaelic Irish in the area are rumored to be practicing paganism. Brighid connects this to last year's mysterious going-ons in the bogs, abandoning her older theory about teenagers, and Uaithne agrees with her. He hears that some members of the revolutionary group are involved. Adelaide becomes fascinated by the group due to her astrological interests, and she and Albán join them, to the disdain of their pious son Aodh. Brighid and Uaithne worry about their family- even more when Cian follows his beloved uncle into the pagan group.

Aodh, on turning ten, is so frusturated by his parents' paganism that he decides to run away and join a monastery, believing his parents' religion- and unmarried state- will bring the wrath of God upon them, as he believes happened during the famine when he was very young. Little Fiachra develops an interest in playing games, often with his brother Neill. A popular mysitc expounds good omens, though the family largely ignores it, except for Aodh.

Diarmaid decides to leave the family and move to a city to work as a cook. His parents are very worried for him. Tragically,it turns out that it isn't Diarmaid they needed to worry about. Fiachra is playing games outside when he falls and injures himself. The wound becomes infected and he dies. After this death, the family is demoralized, and horrified by the next tragedy that occurs when history seems to repeat and Sorcha injures herself play-fighting in an attempt to cheer herself up after the death of her cousin. She also faces an infected wound and death. Upset by the deaths, Uaithne goes down to the bogs and drowns. The family believes they have been cursed.

After the tragedies of the previous year, Diarmaid returns from the city to help his family grieve, bringing back a lot of money he made. His mother Brighid is devastated by the deaths of her husband and son in one year, and her brother and Adelaide are saddened by the loss of their daughter. Brighid worries about Abaigeal, who has developed a habit of daydreaming, haunted by the losses. More happily, Diarmaid returns accompanied by his sweetheart, Sisile inghean Mhic an Mhaoir. He wants to marry at home, and the whole family still alive attends the wedding,excepting Aodh who stays at his monastery, infuriating the rest of the family.

With her uncle Diarmaid's return from his work as a cook, Elec develops an interest in cooking. Meanwhile, her cousin Áine begins to read a lot, soon devouring any book she can get her hands on. Adelaide and Albán welcome a new daughter, Bébhinn, while Caoimhe and Cian have a son, Lochlann. The family is horrified when another famine strikes their region, as they are still haunted by the last one, and people once more return to subsistence farming. Diarmaid's work as a cook provides them with some extra money to buy food, but they still suffer. The babies luckily survive, but Cian's son Teig sadly dies, leaving his horrified parents with memories of the death in the last famine of Cian's sister and cousin. The cat Ismay also starves, unfortunately. Worst of all, weakened by the recent birth of her daughter, Adelaide sickens and dies, leaving Albán heartbroken.

Replacing Ismay, who sadly died in the famine, animal-lover Nora rescues an orphaned kitten, who is named Claire. The whole family is still struggling to recover from their massive losses over the past few years, and Albán especially despairs, too heartbroken to continue with his revolutionary group. He takes comfort in the pagan faith he and Adelaide shared, and is furious with his monk son Aodh for not attending Adelaide's pagan funeral, which even her aristocratic cousin she once chased out of the village attended. The year's only bright spot besides the new kitten is the birth of Diarmaid and Sisile's first child, a daughter named Aisling.

Meadhbh turns her old hobby of collecting plants, started as an effort to deal with the trauma of famine and which helped her survive when the famine returned, into a business as an herbalist. Rory, her cousin who loved helping his mother with her astrology, helps her in the work, as does his sister Aoife who also loves plants. Little Eilís, still dealing with the losses in her family, turns to religion much like her cousin Aodh did long ago. Eoghan, traumatized by the loss of his mother, turns to his couisn Diarmaid for comfort and learns to cook, like his cousin Elec. Worryingly, a minor epidemic sweeps through their region, but the family is very lucky to escape unscathed, even though Meadhbh became sick.

The year after a worrying epidemic, a poet once more comes to the area to regale people with ancient stories. Áine, who loves to read, is especially fascinated. Animal-loving Nora is also fascinated, for a different reason- she falls in love with the poet! Neill, who has always been especially close to his closest-in-age sibling, worries she will leave the family, and Brighid thinks that the bard, Eneas Mac Coingheallaigh, is too old for her daughter. Brighid also welcomes a grandhild from Caoimhe and Cian, a daughter named Fionnghuala, and another, a son, from Diarmaid and Sisile, their first, named Domnhall.

The revolutionary group is active a lot again, and Albán has rejoined it, this time with Cian and Diarmaid joining him. The family fears that rebellion will break out. Neill acquires a farm that long ago belonged to his biological parents. Brighid is sad and happy to see another of her children growing up. Questions are beginning to arise about Meadhbh's lack of a husband, but she admits to her mother that she has no interest in marriage- unless she could marry a woman. More talk arises when Nora becomes pregnant with Eneas's child, and pious Eilís presses them to get married, but remembering that her uncle and Adelaide had never married, Nora chooses not to marry, especially as she and Eneas now share the pagan faith. She is shocked to welcome twins! Her sons are named Dubhán and Tuathal. Nora isn;t the only family member to have sons this year. Diarmaid and Sisile welcome a son, Cathair, while Cian and Caoimhe also welcome a son, named Uaithne after his dead grandfather. Brighid cries when she learns Uaithne's name.

Bébhinn begins to join her brother Eoghan in an interest in cooking. Lochlann starts spending much of his time playing in the garden, with his parents warning him not to hurt himself. Once more, the family welcomes new additions. Cian and Caoimhe have another son, Séarlas. Diarmaid and Sisile also have a son, Allane, making Aisling feel neglected with so many new siblings. Nora and Eneas are shocked when they have a second pair of twins, girls this time, named Aignéis and Catraoine. Meadhbh falls in love with a woman who patronizes her herbalist business, Mairsil inghean Mhic Cearnaig, who works as a seamstress, and they begin a relationship. With so many grandchildren, Brighid takes a look back at her life. She has faced many, many hardships and losses, but she looks forward to the new generations and their future.

There is a windstorm in the area! Brighid stays inside to protect Cian while Uaithne goes outside to protect their crops and cattle. Unfortunately, many of the crops are destroyed and cattle killed, and the family faces a hard winter. Brighid appeals for help from her family, but they were affected as well. Sadly, Brighid miscarried her next child due to the stress of the storm and subsequent lack of food.

Uaithne is working on the farm when he finds a cat in the woods near his fields. The cat appears pregnant, and Uaithne tries to help the cat give birth to four kittens, but she dies. While three of the kittens sadly die, Uaithne and Brighid decide to take in the surviving fourth, who they name Emeline. Cian adores the family's new pet.

A battle between some local lords leads to a lot of Uaithne's cattle being stolen. Luckily, the revolutionary group helps him recover a few, but the faily will still have hard times. Cian develops an interest in playing games, often with his uncle Albán, who he is still very close with.

Diarmaid begins to enjoy helping his mother cook. Unfortunately, this is the worst time for him to develop such an interest, because the last harvest failed and there is a famine, with many people taking to subsistence farming. Even worse, the family, which has already dealt with hunger when there was a windstorm, goes hungry again. Sadly, little Aoife falls ill with one of the many diseases that spread during famine, and dies, breaking her parents' hearts. There isn't enough food to feed the family pet, Emeline, and the cat dies as well. Adelaide, who has never dealt with famine before, is horrified by the suffering, and nearly starves. Her son Éamonn does not survive the famine because they cannot feed him, which deeply saddens Adelaide and Albán, nearly detroying their relationship.

After last year's famine, everyone is still grieving and traumatized. Horrified at the loss of his young cousin while he was estranged from their family, Cian reconciles with his uncle Albán. As a way of coping with the trauma of nearly starving to death and losing family members, Meadhbh compulsively collects edible plants. To bring up the area's spirits, the revolutionary group holds a festival. After the festival, Albán and Adelaide reconnect after having trouble in their relationship, tested by the famine and the loss of their son. Nine months later, their third child is born, named Aoife after her recently deceased cousin with the permission of Uaithne and Brighid.

There are rumors of mysterious things going on in the local bogs. Uaithne attributes this to the revolutionary group, but when he asks they disclaim all responsibility. Brighid attributes the strange doings to teenagers acting up, but her little nephew Aodh believes there are evil spirits there that need to be driven out, and his mother Adelaide attributes it to a bad alignment of the stars. Cian begins helping Uaithne with the farm, pleasing his parents as he is taking responsibility. Adelaide and Albán have their second daughter, named Sorcha. Somehow, Adelaide's family hears this news and sends a cousin to visit her in an attempt to persuade her to return to the family and abandon her children and Albán, but she throws him out and angrily refuses, chasing him out of the village.

Diarmaid decides to leave the family and move to a city to work as a cook. His parents are very worried for him. Tragically,it turns out that it isn't Diarmaid they needed to worry about. Fiachra is playing games outside when he falls and injures himself. The wound becomes infected and he dies. After this death, the family is demoralized, and horrified by the next tragedy that occurs when history seems to repeat and Sorcha injures herself play-fighting in an attempt to cheer herself up after the death of her cousin. She also faces an infected wound and death. Upset by the deaths, Uaithne goes down to the bogs and drowns. The family believes they have been cursed.

His mother Brighid is devastated by the deaths of her husband and son in one year, and her brother and Adelaide are saddened by the loss of their daughter. Brighid worries about Abaigeal, who has developed a habit of daydreaming, haunted by the losses. More happily, Diarmaid returns accompanied by his sweetheart, Sisile inghean Mhic an Mhaoir. He wants to marry at home, and the whole family still alive attends the wedding,excepting Aodh who stays at his monastery, infuriating the rest of the family.

With her uncle Diarmaid's return from his work as a cook, Elec develops an interest in cooking. Meanwhile, her cousin Áine begins to read a lot, soon devouring any book she can get her hands on. Adelaide and Albán welcome a new daughter, Bébhinn, while Caoimhe and Cian have a son, Lochlann. The family is horrified when another famine strikes their region, as they are still haunted by the last one, and people once more return to subsistence farming. Diarmaid's work as a cook provides them with some extra money to buy food, but they still suffer. The babies luckily survive, but Cian's son Teig sadly dies, leaving his horrified parents with memories of the death in the last famine of Cian's sister and cousin. The cat Ismay also starves, unfortunately. Worst of all, weakened by the recent birth of her daughter, Adelaide sickens and dies, leaving Albán heartbroken.

Replacing Ismay, who sadly died in the famine, animal-lover Nora rescues an orphaned kitten, who is named Claire. The whole family is still struggling to recover from their massive losses over the past few years, and Albán especially despairs, too heartbroken to continue with his revolutionary group. He takes comfort in the pagan faith he and Adelaide shared, and is furious with his monk son Aodh for not attending Adelaide's pagan funeral, which even her aristocratic cousin she once chased out of the village attended. The year's only bright spot besides the new kitten is the birth of Diarmaid and Sisile's first child, a daughter named Aisling.

Meadhbh turns her old hobby of collecting plants, started as an effort to deal with the trauma of famine and which helped her survive when the famine returned, into a business as an herbalist. Rory, her cousin who loved helping his mother with her astrology, helps her in the work, as does his sister Aoife who also loves plants. Little Eilís, still dealing with the losses in her family, turns to religion much like her cousin Aodh did long ago. Eoghan, traumatized by the loss of his mother, turns to his couisn Diarmaid for comfort and learns to cook, like his cousin Elec. Worryingly, a minor epidemic sweeps through their region, but the family is very lucky to escape unscathed, even though Meadhbh became sick.

The year after a worrying epidemic, a poet once more comes to the area to regale people with ancient stories. Áine, who loves to read, is especially fascinated. Animal-loving Nora is also fascinated, for a different reason- she falls in love with the poet! Neill, who has always been especially close to his closest-in-age sibling, worries she will leave the family, and Brighid thinks that the bard, Eneas Mac Coingheallaigh, is too old for her daughter. Brighid also welcomes a grandhild from Caoimhe and Cian, a daughter named Fionnghuala, and another, a son, from Diarmaid and Sisile, their first, named Domnhall.

The revolutionary group is active a lot again, and Albán has rejoined it, this time with Cian and Diarmaid joining him. The family fears that rebellion will break out. Neill acquires a farm that long ago belonged to his biological parents. Brighid is sad and happy to see another of her children growing up. Questions are beginning to arise about Meadhbh's lack of a husband, but she admits to her mother that she has no interest in marriage- unless she could marry a woman. More talk arises when Nora becomes pregnant with Eneas's child, and pious Eilís presses them to get married, but remembering that her uncle and Adelaide had never married, Nora chooses not to marry, especially as she and Eneas now share the pagan faith. She is shocked to welcome twins! Her sons are named Dubhán and Tuathal. Nora isn;t the only family member to have sons this year. Diarmaid and Sisile welcome a son, Cathair, while Cian and Caoimhe also welcome a son, named Uaithne after his dead grandfather. Brighid cries when she learns Uaithne's name.

Bébhinn begins to join her brother Eoghan in an interest in cooking. Lochlann starts spending much of his time playing in the garden, with his parents warning him not to hurt himself. Once more, the family welcomes new additions. Cian and Caoimhe have another son, Séarlas. Diarmaid and Sisile also have a son, Allane, making Aisling feel neglected with so many new siblings. Nora and Eneas are shocked when they have a second pair of twins, girls this time, named Aignéis and Catraoine. Meadhbh falls in love with a woman who patronizes her herbalist business, Mairsil inghean Mhic Cearnaig, who works as a seamstress, and they begin a relationship. With so many grandchildren, Brighid takes a look back at her life. She has faced many, many hardships and losses, but she looks forward to the new generations and their future.
