I always think of a Roman General... It's OK, sure... But I'd expect to hear it more on an adult/ middle aged man or even a grandpa. It's an old fashioned name for me.
Maximilian feels more "current".
Maximo is nice as well as Maximino., "Massimo" is Italian.
