It's a very common name for Muslim girls in my country, although here it is almost always spelled "Aliyah" and pronounced as "Ah-LEE-yah".
It's a lovely name, regardless. Considered a great honour for a Muslim family to have an "Aliyah / Aaliyah" in their family.

I know SO many...
I have taught so many Alia and Aaliya and Aaliyah and Aliah children. Spellings vary because it's transcribed from the Arabic and parents often pick whatever they think looks nicer in English on paper.
It is pretty but also has a very fashionable sound.
I find that sibling names are commonly Sadiya (or Sadia) and Aaminah or Amina (pronounced AH-men-a)

I also think of the singer. She was pretty good, and it's a shame she died so young. It's also a shame that she got her big break through R. Kelly. *shudder*
Anyway, the name itself is very pretty, but I would have trouble separating it from the singer. I think the right person could pull it off, though. And I would definitely wonder if it was honoring.

I'm not sure if you're familiar with the pop culture reference or not but I always associate the name with the singer Aaliyah.

My mom would listen to her music when I was growing up and I was very sad when she died. 2001 was a tough year in general culturally in the US ha.
It's sad she died so young but it is also worth noting she really loved her name and tried to "wear it well" and I think that is beautiful. She has one of the best celebrity name stories I've ever heard

I think in the documentary they said ah-LEE-ah. So odd that they didn't research her name properly :O So it is ALL-ee-ah? or AH-lee-ah?
I am not sure if I like ALL-ee-ah, but I think I like AH-lee-ah more than ah-LEE-ah.

A little OT, but I Watched this really good YouTube video a while back on Lifetime films based on real celebrities and it includes an analysis on the one they made of Aaliyah and had archived clips of her saying how to say her name the desired pronunciation, you should check it out Perrine :)

Yeah just in general the think about Aaliyah was that even tho people sometimes got her name wrong she was really proud of and loved her name.. and what mom doesn't want that? I'm sure her mom was happy she liked what she picked and glad she knew it was done with love
As for the exact pronunciation I'm not a hundred percent sure but I do know it's one of the two you said where the emphasis is on the very first syllable and not the Lee portion. At least for that specific individual who had the name. I heard it a few times in the video I'm not sure how to duplicate it in writing.. I'm dyslexic I'm just happy to be here lol!

It's nice that she liked her name so much. It is all we can hope for when we choose names for our kids. As AH-lee-ah I actually find it nice and way more substantial because it doesn't sound so much like Leah+A.

A is a bit over used as an initial right now. You know which initial I wish would get a little bit more attention just because it's kind of cool? H. H needs more love.

It is lovely. I do agree that it has almost become a one person name. And that person's story is a rather sad one. Also, it's one of those names I might admire. But I'd feel it inappropriate for me to use.

I don't like it. It reminds me of the singer. I have no problem with her (she was famous when I was really little so I don't remember her or any of her songs very much) but it has become a bit of a one-person-name, kind of like Madonna or Beyoncé. Also, I watched a documentary about R. Kelly recently and he was a terrible person and apparently also had an underage-sexual relationship with Aaliyah which I now also think of when I hear the name (just to be clear, I see her as a victim and it is 100% his fault, it just makes me think of the whole R. Kelly scandal which is bad).
Apart from that the sound is okay but a bit insubstantial. It sounds kind of boring but looks super extravagant. Too many As.
However, I think I would like it much better with a different spelling. Alia is kind of cute, for example. I also like Alya (but it is pronounced differently).
What I also hate is all the spelling variants. Aaliyah has an etymology, so do Aliyah and Alia. But Aleeah, Aleah etc. seems so trendy (A and Leah) and the name feels boring.
So I vote for Alia but I'd rather use another name.
