...where? I wouldn't pronounce it that way, except to avoid penis comments.

I dunno, I heard it pronounced that way somewhere. Possibly in a course I took on the Roman Empire at UT.
I've also heard Valentinus and Constantinus pronounced with a long I sound.

At least in Italian it should be pronounced with a PEE sound so that would be how it would have been pronounced originally. And I agree, it sounds like penis.
