I like Madeline too, but not as much as Magdalena, Madeleine, or even Magdalen. I think the same - Madeline sounds too soft.

Lena is a nice nickname for Magdalena and all of its variants. Magda is nice too. I like Maggie as well, it should be used as a nickname for both Magdalena and Margaret.

Madeline is a family name, but the bearer always went by her mn. Magdalena is pretty common among Afrikaans-speaking South Africans, and probably in the Netherlands as well. I prefer Magdalen, nn Magda.
