[Opinions] Merricat
WDYT of Merricat?Either as a full name or a nickname. There’s a character in a movie who’s name is Mary Katherine nicknamed “Merricat”. I think it’s so pretty and unique.

lol 'a character in a movie'. A bit of a disservice to Shirley Jackson and a novel considered one of her best! While I'm not the biggest fan myself of 'We Have Always Lived in the Castle', it is a classic. I'm not a fan of the name Merricat though. It works for the character but is a bit much for real life.

Sorry, I just recently saw the movie and I had no idea it was based on a book.

I was just teasing! It's hard to convey tone in text... sorry if I came off snobby, it was meant to be jokey :)

No worries (-;Had I known it was a book, I would’ve wanted to read that first. Most of the time the books are better than the movies.I thought the movie was okay, I’ll have to read the book to compare.

It is okay as a nickname for a very small child but even then kind of silly. It's in the "embarrassing"-category for me. Even as a young child I'd have been embarrassed to be called Merricat. It's just silly.Mary Katherine is bland but I like the names individually.

It reminds me of a Meerkat. As a cutesy childhood nickname, I can see it working, but it feels out of place on an adult. The character called Merricat in "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" was teased quite a bit for multiple reasons. I thought the continued use of her childhood nickname by the towns people and her own family was reflective of how they continued to view her as a child even though she was a young woman. She was very under estimated.

Makes me think of “merry cat”, it also looks like a surname.

Hilarious! I'd be tempted to use it on a very large dog.

Just looks like someone was trying to type Merritt and then, aptly, a cat announced its presence by running over their keyboard.

Reminds me of the iconic song "Smelly Cat" from "Friends"

I'm inspired! I'm going to name a cat Americat someday.I think it's very fiction-y to spell Mary Kat "Merricat." Is she a Merrisioux?
It's still Mary Kat. Like Mary Kate. Marikat could be neat. I could kinda like it.But the Merricat spelling is so synthetic it's annoying to me. Merry Cat ... kind of clownish.

I'm not sure about the movie the poster is referencing but this is a character in a beautifully written thriller novel by Shirley Jackson. She isn't a Mary Sue!

The movie I saw was “We Have Always Lived in the Castle”. I didn’t know until now that it was based on a book.

Oh, okay. I looked it up and instead she is a sociopathic killer. Nice.

Yes, that's my issue, too.

I'm pretty sure the movie is a film adaptation of the novel... I doubt there's another story out there with such a unique name being used as a nickname for Mary Katherine.

For some reason, I automatically pronounce it without the T - MEH-rih-ca (as in 'cat' without the t). I like it very much as a full name. Thanks for bringing it to my notice.
