Create a post that includes the photographs and/or scans, and ask the people there if they are able to decipher the handwriting or at least can make an educated guess about the source language.

It might be a long shot, but it is certainly worth the effort. The community has nearly 107,000 members and is full of people from all corners of the world.

If you decide to give Reddit a try, then be sure to provide as many details as possible about that side of your family. Just "nomadic" or "Eastern European" is not specific enough. The more specific the information, the easier it will be to identify the source language. Based on your description, most people would probably think of the Romani people and their language, but the description is too vague to be 100% certain about that.
