[Opinions] Lindsay - and its weird Scottish popularity ;)
Yes, I know, 70s/80s/90s dated and maybe kind of boring but the sound is just so pretty. Makes me think of linden trees. I also don't think it sounds super dated. Sometimes I wonder if it is due to its nature image. -ey, -ay names have always been popular from Shirley over Shelley to Lindsay and Courtney and now Riley and Ainsley. So the sound itself isn't dated and the association with linden trees makes it sound less dated as well because nature names are so popular now: Juniper, Wren, Lark etc. This is my theory :P It sounds way less dated to me than Kelsey or Courtney. Does it sound dated to you?Which spelling would you choose? Lindsay or Lindsey? Lindsay looks more authentic to me, do you agree? But apparently the place is actually Lindsey so I guess that is authentic too. Hmmm. What is fascinating to me is how many different spelling of Lindsay entered the Scottish top 100. Scotland is the home of all the weird Lindsay spellings. I know other countries used them too but in Scotland they actually managed to make the top 100. For some reason that intrigues me!The ones that made the Scottish top 100 and their highest rank:Lindsey (#89)
Lindsay (#37)
Lyndsay (#84)
Lyndsey (#80)
Linsey (#86)
Lynsey (#15) - I mean, what? Hahaha it really confused me because this looks so weird to me, but apparently there was a celeb named this so it is her fault ;)
Linzi (#80) - :OWhat do you think? Please rate my list: https://www.behindthename.com/pnl/6232

I actually like Lindsay, as a feminine name. Sure, this spelling is likely forever tied to Lohan, but it's the most attractive one to my eyes (Lindsey is... missing something, idk). I remember in high school I tried to make "Lynsea" a thing... oh, the cringe...Linzi has always looked to me like someone tried adapting Lindsay / Lindsey to an Eastern / Southern European country. Like, if I met a Slovenian named Linzi I wouldn't think anything of it; but with an English / Irish / etc. last name it's terrible.

When I was growing up, a couple of my friends had Lindsey sisters. They both claimed that in Scotland Lindsay was used for boys and Lindsey for girls. Since this all happened in South Africa, I can't vouch for it! But I've always liked the name, regardless of -ay or -ey spelling, and I don't find it dated: it never really went viral here. I don't associate it with lime trees, but since I was a kid I've had Linden as a GP (fem).I also knew a Lynsey. She explained that her parents couldn't agree on her name: one wanted Lesley and the other Lynn. So they created a merger. One of her ex-boyfriends named his first daughter Lynsey after her, because he liked the name so much.

I’ve also heard the -ay for boys, -ey for girls thing. The one Lindsay I know is male.

Yes here in Australia ay was for boys and ey for girls, in the 50s and 60s. It's an ok name

It was probably used for boys at some point but all the popularity data doesn't show any usage for boys (data goes back to 1974). But it was crazy popular for girls with Lynsey at #15 and Lindsey, Lindsay, Lyndsey, Lyndsay, Linzi all making the top 100. Pretty sure if all of those were counted together it would have been #1.

I used to like Lindsey for a boy for a middle name way back in the day, Zophiel Jareth Lindsey, Jareth after the David bowies Labrynth, I found myself liking fem name for boys way back in my grades school years, Such AS Kelly, Kerry, Tracy,I did not know it was a girl name when i was 5-7 years old, causes some country singer my grandparents listen to his name was Tracy, but then i met a Tracy that was a girl in fifth grade and then i realize it could be both,
Side note there is a senator named Lindsey ? i think, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lindsay_(name)
it is unisex name, i kind realize you probably referring it as a female name, i guess,
then i started liking for a girl, Lindsey Camilla, Linden trees are a good association in my opinion,
I met a few girl Lindsays , they were alright i guess, and then their is that strange famous American Actress, Lindsay? Lohan, associations, i guess, she had her struggles as for the spellings I prefer the ey ending because aesthetically pretty to my eyes, I guess the say part reminds me of the word say, Not completely bad, just jarring to look at for me, just my opinion and ramblings,
Lindsey for a boy is dated i think, more so than girls, most male lindsays are older,60-onward I think lindsay is newer to girls dated Late seventies to eighties and somewhat nineties ,40 and younger

I know a Lynzee. Kind of cool. I wouldn't use it, but it's an interesting variation. Lindsey makes the most sense to me. I don't hate the name, it's cute. Fairly common and maybe a little dated, but not bad.
