[Opinions] Adeline
I really like this name, but it got ruined when someone pointed out it sounds like “Add a Line.” Of course I originally said it in my head with a nicer flow than “add a line,” but now I can’t get that out of my head. People on this site seem to hate the “add-uh-Lynn” pronunciation (if that is you I’d love to know why!). I like Adelaide but I also think the “laid” sound can be off putting to some. For some reason I don’t love the “add-uh-leen” pronunciation (or the accompanying Adelina, but maybe I can warm up to Adelina). So, what are your thoughts on this name/it’s variants and why?

I like Adeline. Add a Line doesn't bother me a lot, its just "eh". I do prefer Madeline or Adalyn (ad-uh-lin). I just think they sound prettier. Most names ending in -een sound harsh/nasal to my ears, but Adeline (ad-uh-leen) isn't one of the worst. I like -eena more, because it doesn't end nasally. Rosalina, Adelina, Madelina, Angelina instead of Rosalinda Adeline, Madeline, and Angeline. The alternate spellings Addilyn, Adelynn and Adilyn aren't my cup of tea, but they aren't bad. My favorite of them is Adalyn. I'm not sure why.

I love the name Adelina, but not Adeline

I don't hate this name I'm just not particularly into it, my preferences include Adelia, Adela & Adelaide but it's still proceeds Addison in my book. Idk. Just neutral for me. There are prettier names to be had imo. I pronounce it Add-ah-lynn but change to add-ah-line if corrected, and I have known a few that used that pronunciation in the same thread as some Caroline's and Madeline's.

I pronounce it as “ADD-ah-LIEN” but I used to say it as ADD-ah-LEEN. I think Adeline is a decent name that I would never use. I personally prefer Adelaide, and Adela. For some reason Adeline sounds a bit sour on the tongue. Adelaide is beautiful though. Love that. I can also appreciate Aleida. (Even if I prefer Eleida)

I like Adaline, Adele then Adeline

I don't much like any of the variants, but at gunpoint I'd choose Adele. Wasn't there a long-ago song about Sweet Adeline? I suppose it would be my second choice.

I love both Adelina & Adeline. The pronunciation ‘add a line’ doesn’t bother me. And I really like Addie or Addy as a nickname.

I really like Adeline but Adelynn is foul. Addison is also foul. How is it that names so close can have such different feels? Anyway, it's really cute and Adelaide is also nice, but I would be hesitant to use them because of the aforementioned names. I'd also be hesitant about Adeline because of its similarity to Madeline and thus Madison. Addie is cuter than Maddie.

I likewise don’t like Addison. I’m fine with the sound of Adelyn, and I hear that name more than Adeline or Adelaide. I think my biggest reason I don’t like that version is the name is because of the many variant spellings, which in turn obscures it on the popularity charts. Can you pin down why it is foul to you? Or it is more just an unexplainable gut reaction?Addie is such a cute nickname, as is Ada. It’s one thing that keeps the names Adeline / Adelaide on my list.

do you say Ada (the name itself, not the nickname) as AH-da or AID-a? I like it more as AH-da but I've only ever heard AID-a. I always thought Adah was legit pronounced that way but apparently it's AID too. Adelyn seems foul to me because it's taken what I think is a beautiful name and cheapened it. But I don't have an actual good reason. It's probably mostly name snobbery, tbh, which I'm not proud of (but which I've definitely learned in large part thanks to this website, haha).

I pronounce it Ay-da, but I’m American. Ah-da sounds nice but I think most Americans would use the Ay sound. I understand name snobbery. I cringe at the names my husband has listed for girls and feel validated in my snobbery by this website. However, after working in child protection services for several years the bar is low for me when it is not dealing with my future children! (You didn’t name your child after liquor, great!) I can see that the Adelyn pronunciation is viewed as a cheapening of a classic name.

I’m American too but read the name before I heard it and was disappointed by its actual pronunciation. :)
