I babysat a little 5-year-old boy named Gentry, I called him Demetry but I knew it wasn't right so I just called him Gerry

It's one of those names that seems to imply that the namer doesn't know the meaning.
If I forget the drollness of "gentry" as a name, it sounds sort of cowboyish-surnamey, like his brother might be Maverick.

First of all it's a collective noun, "gentry" is always going to refer to a group of people which imo makes it unsuitable as a name. Second it feels rather snobbish. Third "gentry" is sometimes used to refer to fairies, like "the fair folk," which is maybe a neat association but is to me another reason it doesn't work as a name. Altogether, no.

Have you seen it used as a given name? It would be interesting to know when and where this happened. To me, it seems unsuitable.

Well, my first thought is that it isn’t a name, it’s a word.
My second thought is that it’s an inherently classist term, which is offputting. It makes me wonder if the parents wish for the “good old days” of exploiting indentured servants.
My third thought, kind of related to the second, is how the term “gentrification” has become code for wealthy white people moving into a neighbourhood previously inhabited by people of colour and taking over by pricing them out of the neighbourhood, changing zoning and other shady tactics.

I've heard about the first meaning and the band The Gentrys that's why I like the name. I've never heard anyone mentioning the 2nd meaning and the people I've mentioned in to say its an acceptable name

People that you know in person are more likely to share your experiences and perspectives, more likely to want to please you, and less likely to know a lot about names. Around here you’ll find different perspectives, honest answers and tons of onomastic knowledge.
At the end of the day, you like what you like. I know many people who hate my taste and my daughter’s name. Be secure in your knowledge of what’s right for you, because if you just go around seeking affirmation you might find the opposite.
