- Tamara is one of my favourite names. It is Italian in my mind.
- Gillian Is lovely. Is it pronounced with a J sound right? So elegant.
- Erskine is particular! It's the first time that I see it.
- Merrick is so fascinating! What's your opinion on them? How they are perceived in your area?Personal Name Lists https://www.behindthename.com/pnl/125456

Tamara if pronounced TAM-ə-rə is ok. I've been correcting my husband for two years on how to pronounce it. My cousin is named Tamara and it's pronounced that way. He CONTINUALLY pronounces it like tu-MA-rə or tə-MAR-ə. While technically not incorrect, it just doesn't sound as nice. Tamara is usually a very low-class, ghetto name where I live, especially with the latter pronunciations. I don't mind Gillian but I think it looks better as Jillian if you're going to pronounce it as a J instead of G. I like Ainslie well enough. Never seen it spelled that way. I've always seen Ainsley or Ansley where I live.

I like Merrick, Gillian, Janis, Tamara, Ness (there is the Loch Ness Monster association which is unavoidable but I like the sound anyway), Adria and Freddie.Bud, Dutch and Randy are seen as "redneck" names where I live (Northeast United States), Eustacia and Totty are very old fashioned, and Ainslie is a typical trendy name.

In general, I'd say most of these names are American English rather than British English; not that it's impossible for British kids to be named Bud or Dutch, but Randy ... no. Yes, Gillian and Jillian sound the same. Usually G has the J sound before a high vowel; English being English, though, there will always be exceptions. When I was about 10, a new girl came to our class and the teacher asked her if her name - Gillian - sounded like Jillian or Ghillian, and the child innocently said that it was like Jillian but sometimes her mother called her Ghillian (with a g- soiound) when she wanted to impress people! I thought then, and I still think, that it probably didn't work ...
