I think it's common for a good reason! Unlike, say, Amelia, which I really do not see the point of. And the point is, lots of people like it.
There's an Olivia in my family tree. She was born in the early 20th century, before the first World War, in the UK. It seems that, by her own choice, she was always known as Olive or Ollie. I consider this a huge error of judgement; she obviously didn't. I might, given enough daughters, have considered Olivia as a mn, because of its family connection, but not as a fn; I don't mind Liv much, but I can't face Ollie.
