[Opinions] Hugh?
Ok, guys, Hugh in honor of my grandfather who passed away when I was three. What would you think of a toddler named Hugh? A teen? A man? What type of person do you think a Hugh would be?Any middle names you would recommend? I lean toward Alexander because longer middle names seem to balance it out [and my last name is derived from Alexander so I could slide my maiden name in there :o)]_________________________________________________

Hugh Alexander flows very nice. Hugh Nicholas and Hugh Elliot / Elliott also sound nice.

Hugh Alexander is awesome, IMO. I'm not a huge fan of Alexander generally but it fits really well there. I love Hugh (and Hugo) and think it has a lot of charm. It's just... cool. Classy. Kind of sophisticated without being stuffy. I think similarly of names like Arthur, Stuart, and Clive.

Thanks! :o) I don't usually like to stick Alexander in a pair, either, unless it's a really short first name that's not very common. I like it as a mn for Rhys also.Stuart is wonderful!_________________________________________________

I love Hugh, you could even use Hugo as a nn. :b I used to think it sounded stuffy, but I love old-fashioned British-sounding names now, lol. Hugh Alexander isn't bad. A long, more common mn balances it out well, I think.

I used to hate it; they called my GF Hubie. Now I'm just hooked. I haven't done the boyfriend test yet, though :o)_________________________________________________

I love the name Hugh, and it's one of my favorite names.I like that it honors family for you.I tend to vary about how well it will age, but I think it would work just fine for all ages. Although a younger Hugh would inevitably be called Hughie / Huey at some point.I think of a person named Hugh as strong, sophisticated & talented.I tend to use family names for middle names, so I'm not certain what to suggest to you.Hugh Alexander sounds great though!

I really like Hugh. I personally think it would age quite well. I think it would be adorable on an infant, cool on a teen, and elegant on an adult. Hugh makes me think of someone elegant, smart, and sophistocated, but not nerdy or anything. It's a very gentleman-ish name, IMO. MN suggestions: Hugh Daniel
Hugh Andrew
Hugh Lachlan
Hugh James
Hugh Timothy
Hugh Ian
Hugh Thomas
Hugh Bennet
Hugh Dominic
Hugh Wesley
Hugh Marius
Hugh Elliot
Hugh Marcus
Hugh Christopher I really like Hugh Alexander, too.

From your list I like Hugh Daniel (although Daniel is one of my step-brothers' names) and Hugh Elliott best. Thanks for the thoughts on the name. At first I couldn't get past Hugh Grant. Then I read a book with a really wonderful character named Hugh, and I've been thinking about it ever since :o)_________________________________________________

I like Hugh. It was my father's name so it has sentimental asociations. Also when I was growing up I had a great-uncle Hugh and several cousins as well as my dad.(all called after my great-grandfather)I also like Aodh, the Irish version.Going by the Hughs I have known I would see someone with this name as being blonde or fair in colouring and wiry in build, good company, stubborn, witty, quick tempered, clever. I think it's good because it would suit a toddler, child, teen, etc. It would age well.I agree that a long middle name would balance it out and can't fault Alexander especially because of it's connection to your maiden name.

Is Aodh pronounced like Ed? I think we might have issues with pronunciation here, but I love Irish and Welsh names. Glad to know there are other Hughs out there :o) My grandfather was a Hubert, but I don't like the -bert part._________________________________________________

My father was Hubert(as were the other Hughs in his family) too but no one ever ever called him that except his mother(mother's privelege I guess). He never used Hubert - even on a lot of forms he used Hugh.I don't like Hubert myself...it reminds me of a stuffy little Victorian boy in knickerbockers for some reason! Interestingly enough none of the 5 Hughs in his family used Hubert even if it would have made things easier. They all had nick names like Hugh/Hughie-next- door,Hugh-at-number-whatever,Uncle H,Hugh Lastname and Young/Old Hugh. Oh yeah the kicker was that 4 of them lived within four houses of each other!!Aodh is pronounced AY. To tell you the truth it is not very common in Ireland and I'd worry a bit if it would sound like "Eh!" but I do like it and my husband has a really long last name so it would balance out.

Hugh's a lot of different kinds of men. Hugh's strong and tough, a charmer and a womanizer with a heart of gold, a nut whose family lovingly tolerates his eccentricities.Or maybe I watch too much tv; I immediately think of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Hugh Grant as every character he's ever played, and Hugh Newtron, Jimmy Newtron's duck decoy-collecting father. But I suppose that's a good thing--the name has a lot of different images attached, which would make it more comfortable for a little boy called Hugh to be one. (Better than being a girl named Madonna or Cher, at least!)In any case, I think Hugh is great, if not something I'd choose. (It's too classy for me--its star power doesn't feel quite earthy enough for me ever to really consider it, lol.) And Hugh Alexander is a great combo, IMO. It's aesthetically pleasing in sound and look, and it honours you. :DSome other ideas:Hugh Oliver
Hugh Elias
Hugh Evander
Hugh Abram
Hugh Benjamin
Hugh Philip
Hugh Theodore
Hugh Xavier
Hugh Alasdair
Hugh Tobias
Hugh Donovan
Hugh Zachary
Hugh Zacchaeus
Hugh Gregory (which has the dubious benefit of being House times, like, ten)Array

I really like...Hugh Theodore
Hugh Xavier
Hugh Alasdair (it sounds very European, which I am not :o)Thanks for the thoughts and the suggestions. I tried to poll it and the poll people seem almost a different breed from the message boards!_________________________________________________

The poll kids come off as more conservative in naming--and younger--than the message board kids. Far more of them, for the sake of example, disliked the name Evening when I asked about it.I'd trust the messageboard, myself. ;)Array
