Nameberry claims English is occasionally used as a given name so I decided I like it. There is also apparently an Olympian named English Gardner. And for what it's worth: English is not just a nationality as much as a conjunction of many Anglo Saxon references, including the language we are speaking. It's also a surname occasionally turned first as another product of the trend.

Nameberry is a baby name site, not an etymology site, and is not a credible source, and not all surnames make good given names. English as a given name is as silly as naming your kid Japanese or Australian or Danish or Scottish or Russian (some of which are also surnames, but that doesn’t mean they make good given names)

Also that was a bad lineup of examples because Dane & Scott are very much given names lol

Good thing I didn't ask your opinion on it then ;) it is a name, as evidenced by at least one notable person having it, and I like it lol.

I have used Elizabeth and would use Esme as mns; they are both family names.I would also use Eleanor or Elinor, Eloise, Emily, Erica and Enid, though Enid doesn't work with my ln. I would consider Eve, also a family name. I would not consider Edna or Eileen, both of which are family names too.

Oh I haven't heard of Esmeray yet. Do you know what that is from? Elva is nice too, wb Elvira? One or my ancestors was an Emmeline, do you pronounce it Emma- line, Emma-Lean, or Emma- Lynn?

Esmeray is Turkish meaning dark moon
Elva is from the Irish Ailbhe meaning world, light, white, or rock
I have an Emmeline in my family tree too! She was Mary Emmeline Elizabeth and went by Liz. She pronounced it Emma-Line

Ellington is another good one. Very posh. Elvy always makes me think of Tinkerbell. Endellion I like because it gives me a very specific image of a 90s anime scene on a dandelion field at sunset. Maybe because it sounds like end of the Dandelions? And the anime part because it sounds like Evangelion? Yeah that's probably it. hahaha.
