Crown Prince William and Duchess Antigone call off their engagement. Prince Crispin dies of influenza at 52, leaving his wife and children in mourning. His son, Prince Nicol, becomes engaged to a 10-year-old baroness named Rose; their marriage is postponed until Rose is older. From the same influenza, Prince Roland and Princess Lilias lose their second daughter, Lucy, at the age of 7, and Prince Roland gains a paramour, Baroness Clemence, out of grief. In the past few years, Princess Lilias had two more sons - Benedict and Edward - which is a good thing as the couple seem to have bad luck with daughters. King Athelstan also gets another lover, Countess Matilda, after his wife Queen Aldith dies of scarlet fever. A year later, he marries her and she is crowned queen. They have twins sons: Giles and Gilbert. Princess Katriona, who has been with him for a long time, is angry, but she doesn't break off their affair. However, King Athelstan suspects that her brother, the King of Scotland, is now hostile towards East Anglia. Meanwhile, Prince Henry also gets engaged to 16-year-old Duchess Mabel, and marries her almost immediately.
