The Queen Mother falls ill and dies of unspecified causes. Rumors say that she was stricken with grief over the war between her children, which still rages on. Shortly after, Prince Nathan is poisoned by his nursemaid, a sympathizer of Queen Aveline, in an attempt to distract the royal family or force King Magnus to bow out of the war. The grief drives King Magnus to take on a concubine, a servant girl named Is' Berryann. He and his wife have their first daughters, Princess Sybil and Princess Cecile. Wanting to respect Princess Cassandra's wishes not to remarry, King Magnus makes the difficult decision to marry off Princess Amabel in a political alliance with Wales. Princess Amabel is incredibly angry at first, but she understands the necessity of it. They haven't had any children, as Princess Amabel really wants no intimacy at all with him. Queen Aveline has a daughter, Princess Aithbhreac, and betrothes her son Prince Cináed to Duchess Avice of Mercia in a secret alliance. Prince Cináed takes it in stride. He's on the way to be as shrewd and ruthless a leader as his mother. Princess Dionysia has her first children with her new husband, Princess Margery and Prince Peter. She misses her children very much, having no contact at all with them. The war seems endless.
