[Opinions] Re: Which of these names would you rather have?
in reply to a message by ari.
Charlotte - I adore the nn Charlie. Diana is pretty, but I wouldn't like being called Di.
Violet - I like both, but Violet has a prettier sound. Iris is a little quirkier.
Clara - Definitely Clara. Esther is very unappealing to me.
Ophelia - Ophelia sounds so romantic and artistic. I love the painting by John Everett Millais. I wrote a paper on it for my art history class once and fell in love. Cassandra is ok.
Florence - They're both cool, but Florence makes me think of Florence Nightingale, Italy, and flowers. The -een ending of Irene makes it feel dated in English. I love Irene in French though.
Cecilia - She's the patron saint of music, which is pretty. Evelyn is a good name, but the -lyn ending is a bit predictable.
Alice - I don't really like either name. I kind of prefer Vivian because it's softer, but I don't like that spelling. Alice sounds more wearable and plain though.
Hazel - This one is super tough. Today, I'm liking Hazel more than Aurora, but that could easily change if you ask me tomorrow, lol. They're both nature-inspired and gorgeous. The "z" sound in Hazel is refreshing and gives it a slight edge over Aurora, but only slightly.
Adelaide - I don't mind Eleanor, but I've never really seen the appeal of it. I don't really have a reason. It's just one of those names I've never been too keen on. Adelaide is gorgeous and historical.
Luna - I love that it's associated with a moon goddess and makes me think of the night sky. Lilith is ok, but the -ith ending is a bit annoying and lispy.
Alexander - Ezra is a bit too religious for me. At least Alexander has good nicknames like Sacha or Lex.
Felix - I love both Sebastian and Felix. Felix edges Sebastian out, however. It's the name of my favourite NHL player.
Henry - Unfortunately, I just have too many associations with Thomas. Otherwise, I might choose Thomas. Henry is a nice, solid choice. It's not exciting, but it sounds powerful and handsome.
Oliver - James is ubiquitous and boring, not to mention I have a long list of bad associations. Oliver is predictable as well, but at least I can use the nn Ollie, which is adorable and it has connections to nature.
Arthur - I love the nn Artie and the connection to Arthurian romances. Raphael is romantic but a bit too religious for me.
Isaac - I dislike both. I guess I'd pick Isaac, only because most of the people I know named Daniel, Danielle, and Daniela are awful people. At least Isaac has a nice meaning.
Theodore - Hands down Theodore. It's my favourite name of all time. It has a beautiful meaning, cute nicknames (artsy Theo or sweet Teddy), and has stood the test of time.
Gabriel - Gabriel is romantic and makes me think of Heath Ledger. Victor sounds so rough and cold.
Leo - Simon sounds very middle-aged to me and honestly, unattractive. Leo makes me think of lions and Tolstoy. It's short and sweet, yet handsome.
Finn - Tough one, but I'll go with Finn. I just think there are plenty of better names that end in -ian for a boy. Finn is more distinctive, and I love the ties to Irish mythology.
