I think Van is alright, but because it's part of surnames, it is kind of awkward.
I dislike Vance. It sounds smug, brandnamey, aggressive. Smacks of the word "advance"
I can picture a weightlifting gym named Vance Fitness with a parking lot full of pickups and Hummers, more easily than I can picture a little boy named Vance.
My favorite masculine V names:
Vincent, Victor, Vaughn (which slightly suffers from the same issue as Van, because it sounds just like Von in my accent), Valentine, Virgil.
