Among diplomatic tensions with Albion's northern neighbour, Grimhold, a dependent state which Albion gets its coal from, Her Imperial Majesty sends several garrisons of soldiers to its Southern Territories as a show of strength. One of them is lead by Captain Orlando Castletown.
Orlando, even in the midst of a military campaign, would write to his brother and sister-in-law frequently (and sporadically to his wife, though those were short letters, mostly asking about how the estate was faring). When none of them had heard from him for months, they grew worried.
Lady Callista and Clementine band together, petitioning their respective governments to inquire about the state of Orlando's garrison. A delegation is sent to Grimhold to clear the matter up.
Its findings shock the family: Orlando and his garrison (save those who fled) have been imprisoned. The events, according to the Grimholdian government, eclipsed as follows:
Two garrisons, both counting 120 men, were stationed in a makeshift camp. One of them was led by Captain Orlando Castletown. He enforced strict rigour among his soldiers, who were growing frustrated: none of them understood why they were being positioned in the muddy swamps of South Grimhold, which Albion was allied with, and detested the fact that they were not allowed to leave the camp aside from when they were field training, when nearby towns and villages offered entertainment - namely, wine and women. It was Captain Orlando's opinion that his soldiers should have as little wine and as few women as possible, something that did not make him particularly popular among his new regiment.
Perhaps it was the climate that got to him, perhaps it was something more sinister, as he was hale and hearty and had thrived in climates much less forgiving than that of South Grimhold, but Captain Orlando fell ill, and was bedridden for weeks. Thus, the captain of the other garrison stationed with his temporarily took control over both.
It was a disaster. His authority was much weaker than that of Orlando's, and he now had 240 men who were displeased at their treatment. Thus, in order to placate them, he allowed them certain liberties - namely, visiting the local towns and villages to indulge in their wine and women after work hours. Neither of this was technically illegal - Albionese soldiers could not, of course, drink on duty, but in the evenings, they were off duty. They were strictly forbidden from fraternising with the enemy, but Grimhold was not an enemy nation - despite brewing tensions, no war had been declared.
The men took enthusiastically to their newfound liberties - too enthusiastically, some might say. Drunken brawls and property destruction became common. The Grimholdian locals were far from pleased, even though the soldiers filled their coffees by buying their wine.
One day, a line had been crossed - a soldier was accused of ravishing a local woman. This was too much for the people of South Grimhold. They ganged up on the alleged perpetrator and shot him with a gun stolen from one of his drunk companions, stringing his body up on a tree to show what happened to those who raped Grimholdian women.
The soldiers were furious - one of their comrades was threatened. They decided they would repay his lynching, and, despite the meek protests of the other captain, they conducted a raid on the village the assaulted woman came from, burning buildings and massacring civilians.
The Grimholdian government deployed their National Guard, who, after a brutal, prolonged struggle, arrested the revelers - and, for good measure, all the soldiers in the nearby camp. Some were hanged almost immediately - all confirmed perpetrators of the massacre and the second captain. Captain Orlando, who lay delirious in bed, awaited trial for gross incompetence, as he did nothing to stop his soldiers from their disgraceful conduct.
Lady Callista and Clementine immediately deployed their connections in order to secure Orlando's liberty, the former drawing on her late husband's coworkers, the latter writing an impassioned letter to her uncle, a prominent Franconian politician.
Both governments sprung to action - not entirely for noble reasons. The Albionese army, weaker than that of its Franconian neighbour, needed to appear strong. It could not get out to the public that a large swath of them were drunken revellers. Thus, the Albionese media focused on presenting the charges the soldiers were brought up for as fictional - even though the ravishment and the massacre had, in fact, happened - and claimed that the cause of Orlando's sickness was poisoning by a Grimholdian agent.
Whether this was true mattered very little. It allowed Albion and Franconia to mobilise their army and annex Grimhold, getting their hands on its lucrative coal business while presenting themselves as liberators of the innocent Albionese soldiers.
