Ebony… I’ve only known one person by that name and it was spelt differently I believe. Anyway, not bad - but there are better color names. It’s cute and lovely in its own way, but I wouldn’t care to be one myself. I also don’t appreciate the “bony” in it.

It's a Gothic beauty, I like it too. Makes me think of Grimm's fairytales and castles in dark forests. I like how it looks so serious but it has such a bubbly pronunciation (in my accent at least, it's said like "EBBanee" - that O is definitely turned into an A sound!). It's very "pastel goth" to me for that reason. And something about it gives me youthful nostalgia, I guess it must remind me of my taste in names from when I was much younger. Yeah, I really like this name.

I think it's very pretty. However, in the US, it is very strongly considered a name for black girls, and a non-black person using it would look foolish at best and insensitive at worst. I understand in the UK and Australia the name doesn't have this association. Also in the US, it is quite dated to the seventies and eighties. A lot of "black" names seem to have a very short shelf life; Ebony, Tamika, and Keisha for girls; Jermaine, Darnell and Marquis for boys, they all date very narrowly to the same time period.

Probably better than Oak and Mahogany; certainly better than Blackwood, though it makes beautiful furniture. Just, not a human name.
