I'd rather be a Marissa, I'd rather meet a Melissa.
If I had to name a baby ... if the "datedness" factor was equal between them, Melissa. Since it's not equal, probably Marissa. In general I prefer Melissa. It is much prettier sounding and less synthetic and just a better name. But it matters that it has been overused, if I'm naming a baby. It's got more of an image stuck to it and I don't like that.
Also, I have hated a Marissa. I could get over that because I like the name - it just comes to mind when I look at the name by itself, unattached to anyone. I've never hated a Melissa.

Marissa. It’s pretty. I always found Melissa snobby and mousy. A girl with an upturned nose, literally and figuratively. It also just sounds dated to me.

MelissaWhen I was little, I asked Santa for a baby sister named Melissa.

I like them both. They're both really pretty, but I like Melissa more since it sounds more elegant.

Marissa! I don't know why, there's something I really don't like about Melissa/Melinda/Melanie. I think maybe it's because they were very popular just one generation before me, they sound like mom names. Marissa feels more timeless

Marissa also makes me think of mariposa and I love butterflies :)

Marissa. It seems “sturdier” and less able to be dated. And for full disclosure I’ve had bad experiences with Melissas and people with Mel- names in the past, so not a fan at all.

Marissa. Still feels vibrant and lively, Melissa feels a bit middle aged and stale imo

I like them both ...But if I was choosing my own name, I'd pick Melissa first. It just sounds a bit better to me. I also like Julissa and Alyssa, so it's probably the l I like. Marissa does seem a bit more up-to-date.

Love both names, but Melissa more

Marissa, but only because I do not like the nickname Mel. Melissa sounds prettier aloud, imo - but I cannot get past MEL.

Something about Marissa sets my teeth on edge, I absolutely hate it. Melissa would be my pick.
