I like this name, it looks and sounds quite nice. There's also a well-known area of my hometown called Ellice, with the same pronunciation. There's something kind of romantic about Ellis, in a melancholy yet hopeful way. I think because it puts me in mind of Ellis Island, a place where so many people came hoping for a better life and yet it was also a lonely, confusing, coldly bureaucratic place. I think of all those haunting official photographs of immigrants, and that scene in The Godfather where young Vito Corleone was given a new name and quarantined all alone. Ellis has a ghostly sort of aura for me. It works on all genders for me. Ellie is a cute idea for a nickname, very logical. But for some reason I'd want to spell it "Elly".

Ellis sounds similar to Alice so I'd say definitely for a girl. Ellison is really unique and makes a better full name with nicknames like Ellis and Ellie in the same way that Allison comes with Alice and Alli as nicknames.

Like most surnames it's uber-masculine, not a great fit as a given name at all, and utterly ghastly on a girl.

The ones I know are all boys. I didn’t used to like it, but it’s growing on me.

I prefer it for a girl, because of Ellis Kraut.
I'd prefer Alice, though - both sound pretty much the same to me and Ellis always seems to be a last name to me.

I generally am not big on unisex names, but I quite like Ellis, and while my first thought when I think of the name is that it's masculine, I can totally see it working on a girl as it's quite soft and there are a lot of similar-sounding girl names. Ellis nn Ellie for a girl would be quite cool.

I don't really like it, I think it is more masculine

I prefer it for a girl too, but I can see it working on a boy too as it’s a surname (and the girls already have Alice as a very similar option).I detest the nickname Ellie (it’s so overdone and reminds me of elephants, not that I dislike elephants lol). I think Lis or Lissy would be more interesting.
