If I had powerful family reasons for using it, Valentine for either male or female would be strictly a middle name.
As it is, since it would shorten to Val before we'd left the delivery room, I'd do my level darndest to avoid it completely. I have an in-law who is Valerie and known as Val, and I would not willingly commemorate her at all, ever.
