I know a 10 year old named Barley and every time I think "why would you name your kid that?" It would be great on a horse.

Sounds like an "Our Gang" / "Little Rascals" character. Alfalfa, Buckwheat, and Barley.IRL I think I'd pretty quickly stop noticing and just accept it, because it sounds like Marley and Bailey and Barney enough, and there are so many -ley names, that it's barley ... I mean barely remarkable.

It sounds like something Peeta and Katniss would name a kid.Or like Bailey, Harley, Marley, Barney. I wouldn't be surprised to hear it, and I don't dislike plant names, but I don't like the sound much, and it doesn't register to me as meaningful particularly. I wonder if it matters to me that it's not mythical or very highly valued (it's like...grain, horse food, grass, corn, wheat, oats, doesn't have the pizzazz of flowers or spices, but crunchy and wholesome, I guess).I do like Marley and Enya.

No, not unless th boy is a hobbit. Sounds like a hobbit name.

If it was a boy puppy, adorable. On a real person, still adorable, but also cringey. Would be cute on a toddler, but I can't see it on a teenager or a fully grown person of any age. I suppose he could always go by "Barry".

As the major ingredient in beer and whiskey, it seems to be predicting his future.I would avoid it.

It’s trying to be cute, but it has an ugly sound.
