I feel as though if I saw a name like Reed Flynn, or something among those lines and the names you just mentioned, I would assume the parents chose their child's name obliviously not aware of the fact that they are very similar if not the same name (Yes I know Reed and Flynn are not related names). Realistically nobody is real life is going to pay it any attention unless they are a name nerd, or perhaps the parents who bestowed it upon their child had a valid reason that was maybe sentimental to give their child this name. So I say that its not terrible, really not that deep, and but yes it does come off as a bit ignorant.

About two months ago I mentioned the combo Laurel Daphne and it was not well-received. I knew they had the same meaning but really I thought that was madly humorous and I just thought it sounded nice. If I encountered it in real life, I probably would've mentioned that they're the same thing, but Daphne and Laurel are different. It not the same as Charlotte Caroline where they're literally from the same family tree. Imo that's a little weird and side eye-worthy, but most people would not assume Charlotte and Caroline are related to each other. I don't think a lot of people know Daphne means "laurel". Iago James has a nifty sound to it.

I don't like them.

Janet Joan would bother me more than Jemima Paloma, though, because it seems more the same name/origin rather than just the same meaning.
Leon Ari doesn't bother me at all because Ari has more than one meaning. I tend to associate it more with eagle. But Leon Ariel seems dumb.

I knew a set of brothers named Evan and John.

I've met several people named Anna Grace and it always annoys me a bit :)

As awfulness goes, I can't choose between Melissa Deborah and Deborah Melissa.

Any New Zealanders out there? I seem to remember brothers named Hamish and James who played cricket for NZ; or perhaps it was just a nightmare.

Daphne Laurel and Laurel Daphne seem like good combos, until you realize.
Although ... I must say that a daphne (plant) and a laurel (plant) are each growing in my yard right now, and they are clearly *not* the same plant.

I've seen Isabelle Elizabeth (or the reverse) in a few BAs, which has made the name nerd in me cringe. Same with Lillian Elizabeth (though that etymology is admittedly less obvious - a lot of people probably connect Lillian to Lily rather than Elizabeth).

Went to college with someone who had two sisters named Caitlin and Catherine, and while I never said anything that definitely irked me, because I feel like that's a really obvious way of naming both your daughters the same thing. (This wasn't even a cutesy twin situation, either.)

I know brothers John and Ian, and a Jacob James.

I think most people are oblivious to it, they simply like the names, but knowing what I know about names it would bother me.

Not really what you're asking but I know a man who has sons named Liam and William. It makes me irrationally angry.

Long ago, on a naming site far away, a delightful and delighted future father of twin daughters announced this happy news and said that he wanted to name them Anne and Grace. Or perhaps Anna and Grace; can't recall. Either way, I very politely explained why this might not be the best idea, and suggested that he might consider them as middle names instead. He replied with charming gratitude, but I never knew what happened.

I definitely am not fond of combos that are just two versions or diminutives of the same name. I have more grace for same meaning, but it does seem either less thought out or over emphasized.

I think it’s ok. I’m thinking some folks prize the melodic flow over meaning. Or maybe they want to drive the point home?
