Most "-ene" people are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's. It's still an "old person" name. Wait 30 years and it might be cool again. I can see some of them already feeling retro, but not Charlene.
Charlene is such a good choice as a name; it’s elegant, classy, and has a punch to it.
I much prefer Charlene to staccato Charlotte. The Charlene I was at school with is known as Charlie, which is also fine.

I would say I liked this name even if it wasn't my mother-in-law's name. The een ending is not in fashion now, so we have sour-faced, prissy Charlotte instead or painfully tomboyish Charlie. Charlene is soft and pretty but also down to earth and practical. Like my MIL.
