[Opinions] Evangeline / Eva
My favorite girl name. If I ever have a daughter I would only NOT use it if my husband / partner absolutely hated it with a fiery passion. It's getting increasingly popular and so that sometimes weighs on my mind, but yes, I would still use it even if it jumped to #1. My reasoning is not just because of the beauty I find in it but also because up the meaning and that I would be able to tell her she was the best news I ever had. Which is an incredibly sweet sentiment to me. What are your thoughts of it? I hear "Too religious" sentiments a lot. But that or anything else is fine to voice. The floor is open! I love it and wouldn’t say it’s too religious but it’s definitely religious. Like giving your kid a virtue name is less religious. However it’s beautiful and I love the meaning for its religious significance, Jesus is the Good News. :)I would also use it, but as a mn as I love elaborate mn’s and I wouldn’t want my kid to feel pressured into religious beliefs (people don’t often share their middle names with people they don’t know).

I like Evangeline by itself but not with the nickname Eva

Both names are attractive on their own.
However, be aware that Evangeline "Eva" is the name of a little girl in "Uncle Tom's Cabin" the original Mary Sue and a White Savior type. She is so much a Mary Sue that calling someone a Little Eva is an insult.
I would still use Evangeline but try to find a different nn. Angie? Vannie?

I adore Evangeline! It’s my childhood best friends name and I was always jealous of it lol. Her nn was Vangi and I know some people dislike it, maybe there’s an association, but I think it’s cute, although if I were to name my own daughter this I would use the nn Angel or Eve/Evie. I don’t think the name ‘too religious’. It’s gorgeous and elegant and sort of tragic heroine via the Longfellow poem. I also like Eva but not as much.I’m curious how you pronounce the ending? My friend pronounces it like Lin so that’s how I’m used to saying it but I also like it Leen.

Personally, I don't like either of them, but I've never thought of them as religious.

I LOVE it it’s in my top ten! There’s also the character in Uncle Tom’s cabin - may be a controversial book, but it’s a classic, and Evangeline in it is the most wonderful, special, wise child ever. A beautiful name.

I think it's very romantic and feminine. I go through phases of liking Eva and not being very fond of it - I'm in the latter camp now. I prefer Eve and Evie as nicknames.

I'm a bit confused here. I had an aunt named Eva. Just that, and no mn. I asked my grandmother why they chose it, and she said, Because she was our first child, and because it has no nickname. (Gran was Florence, called Florrie and Flo, so one sees her point.) With that, Auntie came into the room and offered to make tea; and Gran said 'Oh, thank you, Eve' without thinking. Me, I much prefer Eve and would consider using it, or perhaps Evelyn, but not Evangeline. My mother had an Evangeline friend whose nn was Vangie; that would put any thinking person off it for life, IMO. As for names with a message, my daughter (and my mother; also my Gran's mn) is Beatrice; she loves travel and makes people happy every day, so she gets it both ways.

I used to not like either name. Evangeline sounded too serious and more dramatic than other names that I liked better. Eva sounded rough, and I usually prefer gentler sounds. I like Evangeline now because it is pretty and dramatic in a good way. Even so, it seems a bit too religious for me to use, and I still do not care much for Eva. However, I don't think Eva or Eve is overly religious. Both names are common enough to have lost whatever "overbearing" biblical quality that they had. Although Evangeline is popular right now, I cannot say from my own experience that it is common, so that is something else to like about the name.

I love both names, don't see as too religious

I probably wouldn't use it myself, but I do like it. I've admired it since I was a young child, so it's certainly an old favorite of mine. (: Although if I were to use it, I would have it as the middle name.
