[Opinions] Jiblet
I was browsing Reddit and came upon a post in name nerds entitled Jiblet. Apparently the mom was calling her unborn baby Jiblet and decided she really like the sound of it. She was asking for people to find names that lent themselves easily to that nickname.Yep.What would your suggestions be? And how is you feel about having the nickname Jiblet? Did you call your baby anything before they were born? If so, did you ever think about naming your child that?I referred to my daughter as Poppy when pregnant. We found out early, and they did an ultrasound to make sure it was not ectopic. They didn't see anything, because she was the size of a poppy seed at the time. Unfortunately, many people started to assume we're going to name her Poppy and I started to refer to her by the name we'd chosen. No offense to the Poppy out there but I would not name my daughter Poppy. My family doesn't normally comment on names that people choose, they'd make an exception for Poppy. It's not really used in this area.

My sister used to call me Chitlin.I'd tell her random words as joke NNs aren't supposed to match the name. It's like you don't have to name a kid Triggertonia in order to call her Trigger; you can just name her Emma.

I think Jiblet is one of those nicknames that "works" no matter what the real name is. It's such a silly family pet name that it doesn't need any support or explanation, like when my friend calls her son Asher "Ham" or "Hammy". It's a private joke. So I'd tell her that. I can't think of any names that would sort of connect to Jiblet... Maybe Juliet?? Virginia "Ginny"?? Um.... Jebediah? Jiblet is a cute word but I don't know how I'd like it as a family nickname. My grandpa used to call me "Muskrat" and I hated it, I felt he was making fun of me. But maybe if a family is actually loving, a kid wouldn't mind a strange nickname relating to chicken guts. I love that story about calling Miriam Poppy before she was born! No kids here, but I remember my aunt called my cousin "The Alien" when she was pregnant with her - because the ultrasound pics reminded her of the Alien movie creature.

My husband called M Skeletor once we had the first ultrasound. My family nicknames are definitely on the odd side. Toad/Toady (from wind of willows, My mom thought I was a lot like the character Toad), Fave (because I was a character and there was no one quite like me), and Salad (My cousin used to tease me by chanting things like Haven window, Haven Christmas tree, etc. My brother's overheard it and started calling me salad.)I don't mind any of the nicknames, and they make me feel loved. Fun fact: We call Miriam Miss Mae, and have done so since she was very young. She likes it but forbids anyone but Xander and me to use it.

Why did your brothers call you Salad?I'm probably dumb, but I'm not making the connection.

My cousin used to tese me non-stop by swinging/chanting Haven "insert random object in view. He used Salad once and my brothers found it hilarious. My nickname could just as easily been window, car, tire, etc. They thought salad was the funniest.

Oh, I see. Thanks for the explanation.

Miss Mae is cute. How did that originate?

Spontaneously.Honestly, it's a combination of things. I tend to put Miss in front of names, Mae is one of her middle names (after her great grandmother) and my daughter is very similar to her namesake. It just fit.

Perfect! I thought Mae was random.

Giblets are the organs packaged with poultry - pronounced jiblet. It's pretty gross to refer to a fetus as jiblet IMO - seems self-consciously gross. I think the person is a troll. I wouldn't give her a serious answer. If she is serious, I think she needs to raise her blood oxygen before she names her baby. Poppy is bad imo, but Jiblet isn't comparable to Poppy.

I really don't reply to post on Reddit, and I very rarely read the namenerd section. Occasionally pops up on my feed. I have no idea of this person is a troll or not, but I doubt it. Look at Chloe's response.I was more curious as to what names could potentially give the nickname jiblet, and what people called their babies before they were born.

I don't have a problem with private nicknames used only by family and only until the child objects. I think they become uncomfortable just naturally as a kid gets verbal. I'm not criticizing them for referring to the unborn baby as Jiblet - I know it feels weird to think of ways to refer to a baby before it's born. I'm criticizing the idea of actually naming a person that, though. I thought that is what you meant when you said "she decided she really liked the sound of it" - that she was thinking she was going to name the baby that. And since I was APPALLED I TELL YOU, SO APPALLED, I misread the question about names lending themselves to the nickname and thought the question was about nicknames based on that name that would "disguise" it. oopsBut still ... it's like she's naming the baby in honor of it being "Jiblet" instead of naming it as a person. They can call the kid Jiblet casually no matter what they name him/her! It's not a real nickname! It's just a pet-name. Like, it's fine to address someone as Dear or Sweetie or McMuffin no matter what their name is. I called one of my kids Bean and the other Tater for the first five or so years of their lives, and it had nothing to do with anything at all. It's fine to make a pet name that plays on their real name, like calling someone named Sabina "Bean" or Taylor "Tater," but I think it's weird to decide you want to call someone "Bean" affectionately and then choose their real name to be Sabina *because* you want to call her "Bean" ... Just call her Bean if you want! Nobody else will get it, and that's OK ... I don't think they should turn her name into an excuse to call her Jiblet. She's going to outgrow it.answering the question anyway

Plus - at least for me - the fetus and infant are two separate entities. For me Poppy was an idea of a child, Miriam was an actual child. Once my child was in my arms she completely stopped being Poppy. And I remember that we were planning to use the nickname Merry Mae when I was pregnant. It did NOT fit her at all.I've never met anyone who continued to use the bump nickname for their actual baby. We'll tell M about why we called her Poppy, and we have a few poppy-theme things around. But that's because of the story behind the name, how small she was when we discovered I was pregnant.CKE once talked about a mon naming her son Rowdy because of how it would sound and look at high school football games. It's a clear picture of moms having a specific idea of what they want their child to be instead of allowing the child to develop naturally. Like me continuing to use the nickname Merry Mae and forcing my daughter to fit it, instead of letting a different nickname develop naturally.

Perfect response! It's like calling a kid "baby" and wanting a name to match that.

Do people give pregnancies names? I wonder how common this is. Mine did not have a name. I would not he happy having been Jiblet during fetus days.

It depends on the person. My in-laws all did - I remember Jitterbug, Sweet Pea, Bushels, Scooter, Skeeter, and Pomp. I think there was a Bugger in there as well. My family didn't.I did it to fit in with my in-laws but it didn't really stick.I don't think I'd care what my parents referred to my when I was a fetus.

Agree. This is a gross name.

I agree that it sounds like a troll. Gross. I would not entertain this person.

It just makes me think of the parts of a turkey (like the neck and kidneys) that come packaged inside. Just gross.

Jiblet sounds like a Pokémon.. I'm glad it's just a nickname.
The only thing that makes sense is a name with a hard G or a J in it, like Goergia > Jibby > Jiblet or Virginia > Gibby > Jiblet. Juliet, Jeanette, Janelle, etc. would work, too.
