She took to praying to all deities she could, spending hours lost in her research with hundreds of books and scrolls open around her in their library. At last, one night, as she walked in the misty air and wept for her failure, a glint of something magic caught her eye. Following the twinkling light, she stumbled upon a hidden door to the Skyrise-Dragonfort home, tucked in the ground behind bushes and trees. The pale starry door, painted with the constellations in a glowing shade, glimmered under the fog-covered moon, and Thisbe knew it was magic.Despite her knowledge of magic and its dangers, Madame Thisbe braved the dangers and swung open the door, the camouflaged wood smacking against the ground with a soft, almost inaudible thud, its sound masked by the magic enveloping it. The door now opened, the light of magic only grew brighter as it filled the secret passage. Her breath stopped in her chest, Thisbe pushed onward, following the soft twinkle that danced through the walls of the cavernous corridor. The lights, she noticed, danced in a pattern, a pattern that resembled glyphs she recalled seeing in one of her books. Returning to the library with that knowledge in hand, she quickly found the source of the glyphs in an ancient scroll detailing the devotion and fealty the Skyrise bloodline had to Blodhlynde, the god of legacy. Many generations past, Sir Lowen's family had made a deal with Blodhlynde, that in return for an assurance of continuing bloodline, they would offer the deity their devotion. In love with Adrienna Skyrise, one of Sir Lowen's great-great-many-times-great grandmothers, Blodhlynde accepted the family's love and loyalty on one condition: Adrienna would give to Blodhlynde one night of passion, the resulting boy-child an assurance of the Skyrise legacy and of Blodhlynde's own. As she read on, Thisbe realized that the deity had worked more than just the one condition into the agreement. Firstly, all Skyrise wives after Adrienna would describe their first years of marriage as though they had lived in a fog, not knowing the ins and outs, not remembering what happened, until they discovered they were pregnant, a fact that Thisbe began to recognize in her own marriage. Secondly, since that first agreement with Adrienna Skyrise generations ago, the Skyrise family had only welcomed boys and all but the eldest would die before they reached twenty, meaning the Skyrise bloodline had stopped with Adrienna. Enraged by the irony and the harm that Blodhlynde had done to her husband's family and to herself, not caring that Blodhlynde was Sir Lowen's ancestor and the true father of her eldest son, Dair, Thisbe returned to the starry door and hidden chambers behind it, flaming torch in hand. With her own meager magic, Thisbe ensured the entirety of that basement chamber went up in flames, red hot fire licking the walls and consuming the starry door. Falling to her knees, Thisbe heard her husband and three sons shout out in pain from within the confines of their bedrooms, safe from the fire but harmed all the same, yet when she went to check on them, all slept peacefully, the only sign of anything gone wrong a glyph quickly scarring over, seared into their flesh over their heart. A glyph that Thisbe recognized as protective. Thisbe couldn't be sure if her rash actions had meant anything at all. In fifteen years, she could still find herself a grieving mother, torn asunder by the untimely deaths of all her children but one, gone mad from grief the way so many past Skyrise wives had. It haunted her, the memory of those bright red flames, the echo of her loved ones' cries, the knowledge of the harm done unto herself in the foggy haze of her first years of marriage, bits and pieces returning to her in dreams. Limbs locked with hers that clearly belonged to one not her husband. Eyes burning into her flesh with a haunting golden gleam. Whispered words of passion in an unfamiliar voice grating in her ears. Perhaps her efforts had all been in vain. Perhaps she would still welcome none but sons. Perhaps she would still say goodbye to all her children but Dair, the half-god boy whose true father had forced himself upon her and who Sir Lowen still knew not belonged to another. It haunted her.Until she gave birth to her daughter. And on that day she wept, for she knew all her nightmares were over.
