[Opinions] Re: Thoughts on this name?
in reply to a message by Woman
It reads to me as an embellished spelling of Khalila (Khalilah). So it's not any more unique than something like, say, Loralai or Nadyah. What is difficult about Khalyla for me, is that I'm prone to pronounce -lyla as "lye - la," but I think Khalila is "-lee - la." So I'm not sure how to say it. If it's supposed to be pronounced "kha-lye-la," then it seems much more "wild" and "unique," like a name invented by combining Khalilah with Lyla (artificial fem form of Lyle). Or, combining Khalilah, Kelila, or Kyle with Delilah (very weird contrast of origins!). If it's "kha-lee-la" then it comes off as a variant spelling of Khalila(h), which is less "wild." Khalila is a good name. The Kh is not a typical English phoneme and seems to positively indicate that Khalyla = Khalila(h). If the intention is not a form of Khalila, but rather an invented Anglophone name "ka-lye-la," then it would seem simpler and less "wild," if it were spelled Kalyla. However ... Kalyla looks a bit like a jumbled Kayla. So I can see the utility of adding an H, to evoke a little bit of Khalilah...
Inventing unique names that don't seem too strange is not easy!Anyway, it's kind of pretty - it just has ambiguities that make it a little more difficult. Some people will probably think it is too strange and difficult to like. It's too strange and difficult for me to like in a way that I'd want to use it, but not too strange for me to learn and enjoy as the name of someone else.- mirfak
