[Opinions] Dorcas and Doris
I was reflecting on Doris again the last few days, which is the guilty pleasure of mine. I think it's cute and I predict that it will eventually make a comeback someday. That made me also think of Dorcas because they are sometimes compared. Indeed, I saw mentions of the other name in both of the comment sections of their respective pages. Stating Doris is the better of the two. Dorcas obviously has dork contained in the name, and it has a clunky way about it. But is Dorcus really so dorky? Is it as bad as we portray it to be? For me it's mostly just the clunkiness of the sound. There had been an ancestor named Dorcas in my genealogy I found. Born in 1656 in Newport, Rhode Island. She was my 8th great grandmother. I still don't like the name, but I've softened to it ever so slightly since finding this out. Please rate my "Names I would Use" list & "Backup Favorites" list. Feel free to rate some of my other lists too if you have the time.

Dorcas is horrifying. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Dork Ass.

Personally, I don't like either. I tend not to like names starting with Do. Except 도하/Doha and Dominic/Dominica/Dominique.

Sorry in advance for my bluntness. When I first saw this, I thought Dorcas was a male name, and I didn't like it then. I hate it even more now that I know it's female. Doris is slightly better, but still not my thing at all. Delores is better.

Actually, Dorcas has always been high on my GP list. Have never really cared for Doris. Have never understood why people think Dorcas 'dorky' think its quite pleasant. Other than the Bible the only cultural reference I can think of for it is '7 Brides for 7 Brothers.'

7 Brides for 7 Brothers.' Is such a classic

I have always enjoyed the name Doris for a girl, because it's so classy and beautiful. I don't really care for the name Dorcas, solely because of its sound. However, it's so cool that you've traced your eighth great-grandmother; how touching to hear.

Oh yes it's very interesting I've been sharing the last month or so on here about different names I found in my genealogy search. The farthest ancestor I was able to trace back to was Edward III!! He was my 20th great grandfather!!

I've noticed, because these posts are always intriguing! Wow, you found your 20th great-grandfather? The two other Edward's must've been of some relation, too! Honestly, that makes me want to look at my own genealogy, more in depth. Lolol, I wonder how far back I can go. Thank you again for sharing this with us!!

I've been using ancestry.com they have a LOT of records information. (This is not a paid promotion lmao) And a lot of times even when I hit a wall and they don't have a record of parents for a certain person, a fair percentage of the time, if I just put the name of that person, their birthplace and years they were alive just in a google search I can still just find their parents. I've even been getting some of my real life friends into this recently too and one of my friends is decended from the "Romeo and Juliet" of the Hatfield / McCoy Feud.

I Don't much care for Doris, although it does bring to mind the late actress, Doris Roberts, someone I always admired. I don't like Dorcas at all for obvious reasons.

I think Doris is sweet because I associate it with Doris Day.

There’s a period-drama called Larkrise to Candleford, one of the characters is Dorcas Lane, she’s a great character and I like the name because of her.

that's cute, Doris Day and Dorcas Lane. matchy

I dislike both of them. Dorcas is clunky as you said, but I might dislike Doris because of an age bias. I always think of an old woman.

I don't really like either name, but since it's a family name, it would be nice as a mn

I love both names and am particularly charmed by the meaning of Dorcas, which clashes with any perception of the name as dorky and unbecoming. I expect Doris will return to the popularity charts in the wake of Theodora and Dorothy (and in the vein of Alice and Iris).

Dorcas is so Old New England. I love it for that. It's straight out of a witch trial. It's the kind of name you really don't see anywhere else! Dorcas isn't really dorky for me. Cursed, maybe. Dorcas has a darkness, but in a nice way. Dorcas makes me think of humble flowers, maybe because it remind me of "crocus". It's a very poetic name. I wonder if Dorcas is doubly doomed because it has not only "dork" but also "ass" in there (I know it's not pronounced the same way as the word, but people are silly). But then, the similarity dangerous "Titus" is gaining in popularity, so why not Dorcas?! I love Doris. I think it's friendly, warm, but also very competent and sensible. I would feel in good hands with a Doris. I also love that it's a name from mythology and has such an interesting oceanic basis. I think Dorothy is making a comeback, so perhaps Doris might not be far behind!
