I think it's just a coincidence; and you've only cited two examples, that's hardly a trend.
Leen names were generally popular around the same time: Arlene, Charlene, Marlene, Darlene.
Cheryl was popular at the same time as Carol, Sharon, Shirley, Sherry, and for boys, Harold, Darrell and Gerald.
Not as many people knew or cared about the origin and meaning of names back then, and there was not as easy access to such information if they did want to know.Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you criticize him, you're a mile away and you have his shoes!
