[Surname] Origins of the surname Gasche
Gasche was my grandmother's maiden name, and while I know that there is French and German ancestry on her side I haven't been able to find anything besides it potentially meaning "left" or "gauche" which doesn't make much sense. I want to see if anyone anywhere has any ideas.

A large concentration of Gasche family members come from the small village of Aeschi, Canton Solothurn, Switzerland. The earliest records from mid 1500s find that the live on the Burgaschisee, the lake near Aeschi.I think the name Gasche comes from Burgaschi. This is an old family from this area.

Without looking it Up, my spontaneous guess IS a derivation from the given Name Gertrud (Gesche IS a known short Form of IT)EDIT: Looking IT Up in Bahlow brings a different etymology: He traces the Name to Slavic forms of John via Jasche or Jaschka.
