[Opinions] Princesses in "Damsel"
I am currently reading the novelization of the new Netflix movie "Damsel" (mainly because I don't have a Netflix account). There's a part in the novel where the main character, Elodie, finds a list of names on a wall in a great big cave (trying to avoid spoilers for those that want to see it), and she deduces that they are princesses who managed to write their names before they died. And here they are below:Anna
Yoojin
Fatima
Minna
Yulia
Thanh
Camila
Sophie
Charlene
Rania
Lizaveta
Ailing
Audrey
Shira
Amira
Beatrice
Mayumi
Rashmi
Eline

How's the book? I loved the movie, despite it's obvious flaws. When she's in the cave finding the names is a great scene.Anna: Simple but I absolutely love this name. I have been known to favor a name if it has an -anna- sound in it somewhere.
Yoojin: Pretty but a little close to Eugene in my accent.
Fatima: Want to like it. Can't get over the first half.
Minna: Oh, I adore thee. I wrote a story where the girl was called minnow affectionately when she was young. Minna is very sweet.
Yulia: Worse than Julia.
Thanh: I know A LOT of women with this name. Like... so many. And they're all so different that it leaves me with a confused impression of the name.
Camila: Prefer Camilla by a long shot but still gorgeous. I hate that it's getting more popular. I only just started liking it.
Sophie: Long-time favorite of mine. The popularity has made me sad.
Charlene: Knew a girl in middle school with this name. Char- is an ugly sound to me. -lene isn't my favorite either, actually.
Rania: ran-ee-uh? rain-ee-uh? rohn-ya? I'm unsure.
Lizaveta: Oh, this one if fun. Reminds me of cheese though.
Ailing: Poor Ailing is failing.
Audrey: LOVE. She's so delicately feisty. Is that possible? I don't know. I think of the slight Audrey Hepburn being a total badass in history.
Shira: Not bad but I associate it with rich blonde women who put down others.
Amira: Very pretty. Maybe a little Bostonian saying, "a mirror" but, y'know... whatever.
Beatrice: Really love it when it's pronounced baya-triss.
Mayumi: Mm. It's okay. I like May. Not sold on umi.

So there are dead princesses named Yoojin and Ailing? The world is a stranger place then I knew.
There can't be Chinese princesses?
A work of fiction can have princesses from anywhere, I suppose, and why not? Yoojin is not a name I've ever encountered, and to my ears it sounds like a waiter who doesn't speak much English, taking drinks orders: Him Scotch, her brandy, you gin. As for Ailing, it is remarkably silly. Perhaps the author knew what s/he was doing, but it's not the kind of book I'll ever read, so I'll never know.
I like Sophie, Audrey, Shira and Amira. It sounds like a depressing story with all of the princesses dying in a cave.
