Catherine with the nickname of Cathy is a multi-generational family name for me so it's very familiar. I prefer Kate as a nickname but I don't mind Cathy either. It has a friendly, girl-next-door vibe to it.
I forgot to mention that many Kathleens used Kathy with a K as a nickname.
My guess is the nickname Cathy declined when a doll called Chatty Cathy came out around 1960.
