[Opinions] Mary
What do you think of Mary?

Replies

one of my favorite names!!
It's a pretty name, but in my opinion it's too common.
It's pointedly Christian. In a mainstream way, I mean - it doesn't strongly suggest piety. But it's not secular. Neither is Maria. Mariah seems more secular.
As a baby name ... I would use Maria, Mariah, or Mary, even though I'm not religious - my family heritage is Christian, and I respect a lot of things about Christianity, so I think it's not weird. I prefer Maria and Mariah over Mary, just because Mary still sounds a little old and staid to me - but I'm getting old and staid myself these days so I don't expect it seems old and staid anymore for people who're younger right now.
Mary seems a bit antique and precious, but in a nice way, like Jane or Rose does - a conservative/traditional-chic aesthetic.

When I was a teen I once thought of Mary as dreadfully dull and plain. It just sounded like nothing in my ears. For a couple years, though, now in my 30's, I changed my tune. I heard this passé, old-lady name used on a bright, happy little girl in a movie, and then in another movie with a teen girl, and it's like something suddenly clicked in my head. I saw the innocence and beauty of it, it came off as very sweet and fitting for these characters. After running Mary a couple times through my mind for a while, I finally saw the appeal. It sounds crystal-clear like a bell, but solid like it won't blow away in the wind either.Sometimes it takes a new perspective to refresh a name for you.
I like it very much: if I hadn't been me, I'd have felt comfortable being Mary in spite of its drop in usage. It's a family name - of course it is! Everyone in the English-speaking world has probably got a Mary or two on their family tree. I used it as a mn for my daughter and it worked well.
Not if you’re Jewish.
Have you included Miriam?
Oh, I didn't!
Boring
I like the name Mary. It's quite prolific in my family for multiple generations. Mary was the no#1 name in many countries for so long that it became a victim of its own success. It had a long run but all good things must come to an end. In the US, Mary was knocked off her perch in 1947 by Linda and again in 1962 by Lisa. Her popularity has been decreasing since the sixties that by 2023, she was No#135. How the mighty have fallen. It's been out of fashion for so long that it would be refreshing to meet a little girl named Mary.Interesting tidbit - A pretty and stylish Australian-born woman called Mary is now the new Queen of Denmark.

It’s sweet and endearing!
It's only blander than flour if you allow your expectations of a given name to stoop that low. Sure, it's favored by fickle trends, but it's a timeless classic. And my best friend Mary has nothing but positive things to say about it!
It's ok
Not a very good name and way overused. I don’t really like most “airy” female names, except Carrie is okay.
