In the UK it was the second most popular name for girls in 2002.
I've met do many Ellie's and for many of them it is their full name.
I do think it's boring. Eleanor or Elizabeth "Ellie" are still boring but she will have other options (Nora, Lizzy etc) just in case she doesn't like Ellie.
