Help[Opinions] And the spelling is ...
... Marques. I assume it's an 'original' version of Marcus, which is used by Afrikaans-speaking South Africans: I once taught a boy named Marq.

As an Afrikaans speaking South African, I've never seen this one. My best guess is a misspelling of Marquis. But who knows, maybe the parents are a multicultural couple with a Spanish side?

I immediately pronounced it mar-KEZZ, even though the look is very French to me.
My first thought is Marquis
Sounds like a surname, like a variant of Marquez.
I've seen this used for black guys in the US. They nearly always pronounce it Mar-KEZZ, though I knew one who said it Mar-KWEZ. It seems to have been a variation of the once-popular Marquis, usually pronounced Mar-KEE or Mar-KEES.

Haven't met Mr Marques! If I had, I'd have certainly asked him. He's in the newspapers for being a sportsman. We don't have a large Spanish or French population here, so their names tend to be somewhat distorted. I've heard the name Jacques pronounced like Jacks, for instance.
The Afrikaans community is a melting plot of predominantly Dutch, French and German origin, but there are prominent Spanish and Portuguese influences as well. Ferreira is a common "Afrikaans" surname for example.
