Ada is in love, her new paramour being a sharp-edged lawyer whom she met on a night out. Her mother and stepfather are not keen on the man, who has been wooing Ada with every romantic cliché in the book, yet always prioritises his work over her and has broken numerous promises for his boss’ sake. Ada inevitably forgives him when the latest batches of flowers arrive, and is delighted to discover that they will soon be parents. Her partner appears rather neutral about the news, and is mainly concerned with the impact this will have on his bank account.

Jules unfortunately never managed to make his athletic dreams a reality. After spending a year out of education with no sign of employment, Sophia tired of his lack of ambition and dragged him to the job office where he was compelled to take the first offer he received. As a result, he is now working on a construction site. He has taken quite well to the physical work and befriended many of his colleagues, and is saving up to buy a small flat of his own.

Luca and Marcel are intrigued by their half-brother’s job, Luca particularly by the foreman’s ability to order everyone around and Marcel by the opportunity to ride on cranes to the top of tall buildings. The younger children have little interest in this. Oscar prefers making things and solving puzzles, while Bea is enamoured with dance and likes to hold her entire family hostage to watch her kitchen choreography. Nobody is allowed to leave early.
