Ada and Jude decided to move closer to his family in New Zealand and were married on a perfect October day there. Charlotte has settled into her new school very well and has found a best friend in her class, a boy whose family also recently immigrated. Max has adjusted less well and sorely misses his father. He has been promised that he can spend all summer back at home, but really just wants to move back. That seems unlikely as his mother has firmly settled and the house is busy with two new children, both daughters. The eldest is curious and bright, whilst the youngest is constantly laughing and seeking affection. Their half-sister Charlotte adores them both.

Jules and Ema have welcomed their third child and second daughter. Unlike their other two children, DD is a ball of energy constantly trying to get into trouble and Ema is rushed off her feet trying to keep up with her. They both find it difficult that Jules is called away to distant job sites, but as he has no in-demand qualifications, he is struggling to find a different role closer to home. The thought of starting his own handyman business appeals, but the financial implications put him off. His daughter Danica is fascinated and wants to join him on site, even trying to sneak into the car when he leaves for work. By contrast, his son Robin couldn’t care less.

Luca’s relationship with his neighbour improved greatly after Marcel found a new job and moved out – so much so that they are neighbours no longer and live in the same house, married with a baby daughter. DW is an architect and it transpires that their workplaces are in the same street, although they rarely see each other there. She has received the rare seal of approval from Sophia, who admires her intelligence and thinks her personality is a good match for Luca. The couple are devoted to their daughter, a calm and easy baby who already has her grandparents wrapped around her little finger, and their home is a happy one with the TV always at a perfect volume.

Marcel is also married now, much to the surprise of his family, who were scarcely aware he had a girlfriend. His new wife is a vet and his polar opposite in personality – stern and organised where he is slightly chaotic. Nobody is quite sure what they saw in each other, but Sophia concedes that her new daughter-in-law is good with money and very reliable, which is probably something her son needs. Marcel continues to play with cars as a hobby, but his new career path is as a firefighter, a job significantly less exciting than he thought it would be. If he can help people, though, it’s good enough for him.

Oscar’s exams were successful and he decided to pursue a career in the food business, training as a commis chef with ambitions of becoming a pastry or sauté chef. He gets along with his colleagues and loves the busy rush of the kitchen. Beatrice has also left school and is studying languages at university, as well as self-teaching in her spare time, always looking ahead to the day she can move abroad. Thomas and Sophia are proud of their children, although sad that they are all so busy and dreading the day when their home will be completely empty.
