With all of their children having flown the nest, Thomas and Sophia have started a new chapter in their lives. Thomas has been suffering persistent pain in his back and legs for the past year and has been persuaded to step back from work. He sold his computer business, even if the money didn’t exactly compensate the loss of something he was proud to have built, and this along with Sophia’s salary allows them to live comfortably and take care of their children when required. Despite these duties, the couple are starting to enjoy their new lifestyle and have been on four holidays this year. Thomas is already considering the possibility of buying a holiday home somewhere sunny.

Ada thought Ellie would be her youngest, but fate had other plans. She and Jude were delighted to welcome one more daughter in 2010, and the baby’s sisters were over the moon. From the youngest to the eldest, Charlotte and her best friend from school, now her boyfriend, have left their families' rural home to chase their dreams in the city together. She has started an internship at a newspaper while he is attempting to forge a career in music. Max has started writing – specifically on a warm summer afternoon, he suddenly ran inside and has scarcely left his room since. He only sparingly allows people to see his work and seems embarrassed to talk about it. Ada is rather worried that all the time spent in imaginary worlds will be wasted if he isn’t willing to publish it.

Jules has dipped his toe into the world of handyman work, scheduling jobs for the weekends. Ema was not exactly pleased that he was going to work on so many Saturdays, but her mind has been changed by the participation of their children. Danica has been leading the charge, advertising her father’s business and walking the streets to slip the flyers through letterboxes, and enlisting her siblings to offer a car washing service to his customers. Piper is especially useful – they get paid more if she is part of the team.

Luca and Sophie have had two sons, including one born this year. Their elder son is interested in his new brother and enjoys stroking his head, believing it will bring him luck. Jeanne is surprisingly indifferent to them, and while she enjoys using the three year old as a playmate, she quickly grows frustrated with his inability to follow instructions and prefers that the majority of her parents’ attention should still be bestowed upon her.

Marcel and his wife have also had a son this year, as Rachel felt she was running out of time to start a family. Meanwhile Oscar was married on a windy March day to a nurse. As always, Sophia has an opinion on their relationship, and questions how solid it can be when both of them have such busy jobs and only see each other for an hour a day. Perhaps that is one way to find harmony, she says.

Beatrice has achieved her dream of being a tour guide in Italy and is thoroughly enamoured with the country’s beauty. In the course of her role, she crossed paths with a Scandinavian publisher on a solo trip to Tuscany. Beatrice took it upon herself to show him the best of Pisa, Florence and Lucca, and the two have remained in contact since his return home.
