There is the tv media star/designer Banjo Beale who is Australian but his real name is Brendan so it is a nickname.
Absolutely not.
It's fun as a children's book character or a nickname.
On a human? Nope.
I'd also not name a child Violin or Tuba.

My maternal grandparents back when they were still around had a small dog named Banjo. This dog, despite being pint sized, made mine and my younger sister's experience visiting, unpleasant. This dog absolutely did not care for little kids and the memory of having to be carried or begged to be carried through the garage into the actual house, is a core memory that has remained with me still till this day. (You had to go passed the garage where people usually hung about before entering; I know it sounds weird.)
Oddly enough, the little demon dog was fine once we entered the actual house, apart from a few warnings growls. That is what immediately comes to mind, apart from well, the instrument. I don't care for it on a person.

Similar to Pink Princess, it's not totally unheard of in Australia due to Banjo Patterson. I knew one real life Banjo a few years back. I wouldn't personally use it but it doesn't make me recoil in horror either.
As a nn, sure. As a legal name, no.
Well, Ban is close to Ben and Jo might as well be Joe. Better in a book than in real life, but also better than, say, Guitar.
Not a fan.
It sounds like either a pet or a fictional character not meant to be truly realistic. I know a couple celebrities have used it but it isn't a name to me.
There is a Japanese voice actor named Banjō Ginga(not his original given name). And I think there is a river by this name in Japan. Does anyone know about Banjo in Japanese?
I actually like it. It’s quirky and interesting, but doesn’t sound so out there that it’s ridiculous, well not to me anyway. I’m Australian and one of our most famous poets was Andrew Barton Paterson, known as Banjo Paterson. Maybe that’s why it doesn’t seem odd. There is actually a boy at our church named Banjo.
I'm personally not a fan, Banjo is the name of Rachel Griffiths child (Australian Actress) so to me it falls under the category of ridiculous names celebrities give their children, right up there with Apple (iconically, Gwyneth Paltrow) and Lyra Antartica (Ed Sheeran)
