I am due in August and my DH wants to name our future son Christian. I think the name is okay, but do not love it. What image does the name Christian give to you?

I love Christian!
Princess Mary and Prince Frederik's son really made me like the name. It's so nice and I could picture a dark-haired boy that is knowledgeable and knows a lot of languages, just what I like!

I think of Christian as a label as well. I'm a Christian and I don't have a problem with the name, however, I can understand how some might. There's a child at my dd's school named Christian Love. Now, while I think Christian love is all well and good, I think the combo is a bit tacky -- especially if the child isn't a Christian and doesn't like the label or doesn't exactly display Christian love. ;-)

There is this adorable little boy named Christian who goes to my church, and thats who I think of when i here it but otherwise i think it is a very diversified name that I can see as a little boy or a grown man. You could have a more popular nn like Chris for him.

Christian to me is a title or label like Muslim Hindu Jew, I find it difficult to view it as a name.

When I hear the name Christian I think of a child whose parents are Christian. This is a rather neutral association for me, but since you've expressed that you don't like I'd look for another name. What are some other names you or your husband like? Post a thread with those names and ask for suggestions. We love to give suggestions :)

I think of *a* Christian, which for me
as an atheist, doesn't exactly do a lot for the name. I do like some Biblical names and all, and ones with Christian or other religious-themed meanings or connections (Abraham, Jeremiah, Solomon, Christopher, whatever else) but Christian to me is more of a label than a name. Since it's a label that I completely reject for myself I don't think I'd bestow it on my child. Ditto that for any other outright religious label whether it happens to be generally acceptable as a name or not.
If I was in your shoes without all of my own personal connotations, I still wouldn't use it. You don't love it and that's reason enough.

I agree. It does seem like more of a label than a name. I prefer the way Christian sounds over the sound of Christopher though.

I love the name Christian, to be honest. It's masculin and strong.

My picture of a Christian is a king, since every other king of Denmark, for a very, very long time, have been named Christian. We have a baby prince, not even a year old, who's named it since his father is our Crown Prince Frederik (which is the name used in between the Christian's).
In short: I see a royal person for my inner eyes.

I love the name Christian! I think it's so strong and masculine. I picture a strong-willed, dark-haired boy that everyone likes.

Christian sounds like someone willing to do what no one ever has before--because I associate it with one of my first ancestors on my mum's side to come to America. He came to the US from Switzerland at about 21. I can't imagine how frightening that would've been, even as it was exciting and new. So I have a very positive image for the name.
After that, I picture Ewan McGregor's character in Moulin Rouge!--another very good association, lol. So, overall? Youthful, idealistic, courageous, daring. For me, that's Christian in a nutshell.

Moulin Rouge is the only reason I even slightly like the name Christian. But I wouldn't use it because of 1) the popularity and similarity to the previously overused Christopher, and 2) theological associations. Yes, I happen to be a Christian, but like others have said before, people don't go around naming their kids Pagan or Buddhist, so it still seems a bit 'odd' to me. :-/

Christian either brings to mind religious connotations, obviously OR a designer sort of fashionista boy image- partly from Christian Dior and also the character Christian in the movie Clueless... he was very fashion-oriented.
