No, they would not have to start with the same letter. They could, if you felt like it, but there's hardly a law for it.
If I were to stick to this same first letter bull (for first names, at least), they'd be Roberta Rae and Rosemary Clair (Birdie and Romy). ;) Otherwise, I'm feeling Evening Rae and Rosemary Clair. Together, Evey and Romy or Evey and Posey.
