WDYT of the name Martina? Would you use it as a fn or mn for your daughter?

Love it! It's a real forgotten gem which ought to have much more attention, and a refreshing alternative to the more common "Mar-" names. I would prefer it as a FN.

I love it--reminds me of Martina McBride, who has an absolutely amazing voice. I don't know that I'd use it for a real daughter (there are plenty of other people I need to conjure up in names before Ms. McBride, lol), but I'd love to meet a little girl named Martina.

Tina, Tinny, Mari, Mara, Marta, and Marti would all be really cute nicknames. I especially like Marti, oddly enough--it's very Grease and retro-cool to me.

The only nn I'd like for it is Marta, but why does Martina need a nn? :)

...Says the girl who didn't have one up until college, lol.

I think that's why I'm drawn to nicknames, really--I never had one that stuck, even though I gifted my sisters with at least a half-dozen each.

I have a "thing" where I call almost everyone I meet by their first syllable. (Amy is "Aim", Megan is "Meg", Kevin is "Kev", Jared is "Jare"...etc ;) )
That's nn enough for me ;)

Yeah, I was Ames a lot when I was little, and Amy Raemy, lol. But I was jealous of the Elizabeths "Liz" and "Ellie," Christopher "Chris," and Jessica "Jessy." I wanted a nickname, not just a pet name.

But now I'm AR in college a lot, so that makes it better. ;)

My first name offers a nn, so I go by that. It was just because there were so many other Caitlin's that I wanted to be different, haha.

I recall doing that with all my gf's when I was in high school! The boys would all make fun of us...and mock us by doing the same to thier names. They went so far as to call James, "Jam"; a nickname that has stuck some 15 years now! (Oh gosh I'm old!)

Well,...

my sister's fn is Martina and when she was a little girl all family members called her Mine (Mee-neh). When she became older this stopped and now everyone calls her Martina. I think she's fine with it.

I never really had a nn, unless you count "Lau" (Law). When my mom chose the name Tara for my sister, she thought there weren't any nicknames for it, but all her friends call her Ta or Tazie.

Martina is nice. It's not a personal favorite, but I love seeing names revived.

I ADORE Martine, however. Now there's an elegant name if ever I saw one. An underappreciated gem.

Makes me think of martinis. :-/ Or Martina McBride or Martina Navaratilova (sp?). Also a way to combine Martin & Tina, neither of which I care for. I can tolerate Martina, and the nn Marti/Marty would be cute (it's my parents' dog's name - Marti :b) but not something I'd ever use.

It's a nice name. I invariably think of Martina Navratalova (spelling?), the famous (and famously gay) tennis player, which is a positive association, as far as I'm concerned.

My mother is called this and goes by Tina as she dislikes Martina. It sounds very dated 60s imo in Germany. I'm not a hugh fan of the name either, so I don't think I would name a child this.

I don't think it's a name I'd ever use, but I could definitely see it on someone else's daughter. It reminds me of Martina McBride, who, as others have said, has an amazing voice :)
