[Opinions] Oona
DH and I(ln Vaughan)are expecting a baby in late September, gender unknown. As I've said before, if we have a girl, I'd like to honor my late maternal grandmother, Agnes. One name I've fallen in love with is Oona, which according to several sources is an Irish variant of Agnes. (DH and I both have Irish roots, so this is particularly appealing.) I fell in love with this name years ago, but when I mentioned it to my parents, they weren't exactly fond of it. Alot of people seem to dislike this name, and I'm curious why this is. Please tell me what you think of the name Oona, and why. Thanks in advance,
~*carrie*~By the way, one combo we're considering is Oona Violet Marie (all family names).

i had a friend recently wanted this name and everyone disapproved mainly because we live near mexico where oona & Uno sound too similar...But its a very pretty sophisticated sounding name to me...it sounds exotic and fresh...i really like it
I think people are afraid of any "ethnic" sounding names (unless its italian for the flowery factor)...but love it in real life...maybe even secretly lol

I find the name both visually and aurally unattractive, is the short of why I dislike Oona. I don't understand why people like it any more than you understand why I don't--it's one of those feelings, if you know what I mean. :)That said, I'd rather you express your Irish roots with Oona than with, say Braenagh or Kelleigh; it'd be refreshing to meet a little Oona, and it might improve my image of the name.Oona Violet Marie has a nice flow.Array

I love Oona, spelled Una. It's short and sweet and very Irish. I love it! Una Violet is simply beautiful. I also like Una Lynn Marie.~Lisa~

I think it sounds pretty, but it's not one I personally like, because the Oo- part is visually unattractive to me. I'm glad you're showing pride in your heritage though. :)

I agree with most people here: I think it's a very beautiful name, but the "Oo" is perhaps too fictional-looking (if that makes sense, as if it came from Tolkien). I really do prefer Una for visual aesthetic. I think it also sounds beautiful spelled either way. And, hey, if Uma Thurman can make her name work, why not Una?The only reservation I have, as Fink stated, is that if you live near Mexico (for the US), as I do (San Diego), you might have problems, especially if you spell it the preferred "Una" way. One benefit, it would be perfect for an ONLY child. Hahaha!Cheers,

I agree with aquanoun--"fictional-looking" is exactly what I thought. To me it looks like something out of Star Wars because of the "Oo" at the beginning (I think there actually was an alien named Oola in Star Wars). At first I couldn't understand how someone could like this name, then I saw one of the posts mentioning Una and realized it was the look that was putting me off. The sound is nice, and I like it with the spelling Una; I just couldn't get past the "sci-fi" look of Oona.

I like Oona, and only spelled this way as I have sometimes seen Una which I dislike. I think it sounds pretty and I like Oona Violet. I think it is the "ooh" sound that puts people off usually.

Oona is a lovely name!

I think it's lovely, and your combo is beautiful. It's cute and spunky enough for a child, but absolutely gorgeous and sophisticated for an adult.

To me it sounds like a character straight out of the Clan of the Cave Bear series. Oona sounds like something a cave man could manage to grunt. It's not that I think the name is that bad. I think I might even really like it if I had a normal association with it. But for now, I picture someone barefoot, dressed in animal skins, holding a club.

Love itI love the name Oona, although I prefer the spelling Oonagh (it looks more finished to my eyes.)People aren't used to many O names, and then this one has an "oo" sound at the beginning -- they're just not used to it. I have never heard that it was related to Agnes - thanks!
