Sinclair Lewis published a book in 1923 (Babbit) in which a female character was named Mrs. Tanis Judique. That is the first instance of the name I can find. I don't think it suits a boy.

Heed the Dragonlance!Margret Weiss and Tracy Hickman have written a series of books called Dragonlance.TANIS was a central character in these books. He was Half elf and half man. He tended to fancy sensitive elvish women though, so perhaps he had a few more ounces of elf in him than had of man. Here is a link leading to a nice graphical illustration of the massive amount of dragonlance books these days:
http://www.wizards.com/books/main.asp?x=dragonlance/novellist,1&b=dragonlanceI myself have only read the old material covering the time from the founding of the adventure party and until Raistlin... Well I shall not reveal what the end is but let me say it is of immortal proportions!
I started on some of the "Dragonlance heros", but never went very far for I felt that the tale they had to tell had been told in the old material. The latter material appeared to me to be more of the same and nothing new, so to speak. But the old material was great and you should take a look at it if interested in what associations a rather large group of fantasy readers get hearing the name Tanis.

I really can't imagine that name for a boy, Skyball. A girl, yes, but I just get too many feminine vibes from it to imagine it for a boy.Wasn't "Tanis" the name of the city in *Indiana Jones and the Lost Ark* where the ark was supposed to be hidden? Also, I found this website which claims that "Tanis" is the Greek name for the Phoenician goddess, Tanith.http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Lofts/2938/punicdei.html#tanitThere is also a Persian goddess named "Tanais", who is identified with such goddesses as Anaitis, Artemis , and of course Nanaea . :)-- Nanaea
