Despite really hating the fact people dont stick with the classic names (for the main reason, because I prefer the classic over the nn, and would call them by their full name), a lot of people are using nns as fns nowadays. How many Nick, Tom, Mike, Joe, Kristy, Chris, and many others do you see without the full name. I think the same goes for Kate. It works, although, I dont like the idea simply because I call all Katherine's I know, Katherine and not Kate (even if thats what they go by)
