I love this name-I think it's beautiful and so soft sounding. I grew up with a few Heathers but I don't find it dated and would love to hear it on more babies. I would like to use it myself but my husband dated a Heather! :)

I suppose that makes sense. But I did know a family of several generations with an interesting tradition. The father got to name the first girl after a past girlfriend. The mother got to name the first boy after a past boyfriend.
Otherwise, they were a "normal" family, really!

There was a movie in the 80s called Heathers, that was basically about how every popular snobby girl in school was named Heather. This definitely solidifies the "dated to the 80s" association. It seems like an airy, not very strong sort of name.

Where I live (Scotland), it's very popular *now*, and has been for at least 30 years ... So I see it as overused but not dated.

Well, it's my name so I guess I should say something about it. :b
I was born in 1976, right around the time it hit really big. Most of the Heathers I know are at least 2 years younger than me, but maybe it just didn't get popular in the area until closer to the 1980s, lol. When I was growing up, though, I rarely had a Heather in my class, but when I got into college and work situations with more of a mix of age groups, all the Heathers started coming out of the woodwork. :-/ I currently work with THREE other Heathers. Oy.
Other than the popularity and the somewhat-bimbo stereotype, I actually love my name. I didn't when I was growing up, because it was so popular--and I was constantly being confused for a Jennifer. *rolls eyes* Then the movie Heathers came out, and even though I like the movie and think it's hilarious, it's not the most positive assocation. :) But when I started getting more interested in names, esp. 5 years ago or so, I started appreciating it as a flower name, and a flower that grows in the U.K., which is great because I have a great fondness for all things Scottish/Irish/British/Welsh. LOL.
It's also fun to find colors of paint and clothing, and different fragrances, that have 'heather' in the title. My best friend even stole a sign from Costco in Canada for heather plants and gave it to me. (She's a dork, but I love her. ANd I still have that damn sign!) So, it's not a name I'd really advise for others to use nowadays just because it's lumped into those 1970s-80s names that really date us to that time period. But I can appreciate as it being my name, at least.
BTW, I'm very glad my mn is not Lynn, Ann, Marie, or Nicole. I haven't met many (any?) Heathers that didn't have one of those middle names. Mine is Georgette--which I hated growing up but I now appreciate as well. :)

You certainly don't see it on little girls much anymore, you see it on their moms! lol Hugely popular back then though.
I don't care for it because i don't generally like the th sound. Also knew a really mean, hateful girl named Heather who grew up into a very mean hateful woman. So the name has been further spoiled for me by that association. However, were it not for the mean Heather I knew, I would probably like it fairly well for a th sounding name.

I don't think so at all. I think it's a pretty, underused name (thought it's not one I'd use personally). My friend's sister has a 2 year old daughter named Heather. She has endeared me to the name because she's so cute and intelligent.

I LOVE Heather - it has such a nice, soft, dreamy feel to it. I'm kind of jealous because I know a Heather who has a ln that goes perfect with her fn and it sounds like a character in some fabulous novel. But yes, I love the name and I don't think it's dated (well as long as it isn't paired with a mn like Nicole or Michelle).
