I also think of the gypsy in the Hunchback of Notre Dame, but I think it's a very pretty name. More of a GP for me, and not something I'd ever use, but it has such an exotic sound imo. I pronounce it "es mehr ahl dah" (the way it's pronounced in Spanish). Very pretty :-)

I really like Esmeralda - it has such a pretty sound. I feel the same way about Esme, actually, though its not a name I would consider using myself.Check Out Blinkyou.com for thousands of custom glitters and layouts

I think it's pretty, but I prefer Emeraude. :)Array

I think of the Hunchback of Notre Dame also. It has a mystical, slightly sinister quality to me. A great name for a witch or a hermit who lives in a cave.Generate Your Own Glitter Graphics @ GlitterYourWay.com - Image hosted by ImageShack.us

I ♥ Esmeralda. It was in my top 10 for ages, but now is in about 11th or 12th place.
I don't personally tend to think of the gypsy because I have a character named Esmeralda and so i tend to think of her. Still, I like the idea of it on a medium skin toned person for some reason. And certainly, it could go on someone with green eyes considering it's meaning.
It's much more appealing and much less trendy than Emerald, imo.-Seda*Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I love the name Esmeralda. It's beautiful, spunky, exotic, and very strong. It does make me think of Esmeralda from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, but that's not a bad association because it's one of my favourite books.
